TWO Spielberg flops within a decade!

The BFG (2016)

Woke Side Story (2021)

VERY unusual for Spielberg, given he's one of the most successful Hollywood directors in the history of cinema, and I believe something like 6 out of the top 10 highest grossing movies of all time were personally directed by him.

Even his films that get ridiculed and are considered "bad" still usually end up VERY successful at the Box Office IN SPITE OF their scathing response... examples being Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Maybe Hook too? I think critics were heavily divided on that one, but kids loved it.

Spielberg has had flops before, to be sure, but its always once in a blue moon and often much earlier in his career. For example, back in the 70s he made 1941, which was a low-key John Belushi comedy about World War II.

TWO flops in under a decade time, though, that's UNHEARD of a guy of Steven Speilberg's caliber. I guess the closest he ever came was "Always" and "Empire of the Sun", which I believe both got a lukewarm response. But meh, those movies are worth checking out. A remake of West Side Story? Not so much...

Spielberg WAS my favorite director. His last decent movie was Saving Private Ryan. After that movie, his style completely changed.

reply

I heard ya, I turned on Tim Burton for a similar reason. He WAS my favorite director... UNTIL he remade Willy Wonka and ruined it!

reply

Yeah, Burton used to be great, too and his Willy Wonka did suck. It's a shame these great directors have lost it.

reply

Willy Wonka and Alice in Wonderland on for me regarding Tim Burton’s movies getting worse. I feel like his last good movie was Sweeney Todd, although I still think even that movie was butchered to some degree.

Another decent movie of Spielberg's was Schindler's List, as well as Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Post, as well as Munich. I thought that Jurassic Park was somewhat overrated, however. I did enjoy The Goonies and E. T. Extraterrestrial.

Have you even seen it? Or do you just enjoy crowing when a director has flops? Do I detect a note of antisemitism in your ravings about Spielberg?

Proof you don't know what you're talking about: "1941 was a low-key comedy with John Belushi about World War 2." Whatever you wanted to say about 1941 good or bad, there is nothing about 1941 that is "low key". It is loud and bombastic from the start and keeps getting louder as it progresses. The closing credits are a montage of the actors screaming at certain parts of the movie. Putting John Belushi in the cast almost insures the film will be the opposite of "low key". It is a wild, anarchic spectacle, and hardly the "flop" it was perceived to be in '79.

For the record, I HAVE seen The BFG, and I thought it was a GOOD movie (certainly a better Roald Dahl adaptation that Tim Burton's Willy Wonka remake) and didn't deserve to flop. I just remember people pointing out at the time that it was highly unusual for a film directed by Steven Spielberg to flop. Now he's managed to get TWO flops in less than a decade time. As I noted above, that's completely unheard of and certainly newsworthy.

>> Do I detect a note of antisemitism in your ravings about Spielberg? <<

WTH? I didn't mention ANYTHING about Spielberg's Jewish background or even make some stupid stereotypical remark like "he would have been better suited remaking Fiddler on the Roof if he wanted to do a musical". Your strawman argument is particularly stupid since Hollywood overall is heavily Jewish, so I was motivated by "antisemitism", I'd want MOST of Hollywood's films to tank. One of my favorite directors of all time is Mel Brooks, apparently he didn't get the memo that I'm "antisemitic" when he autographed my prized Mel Brooks collection. And Mel Brooks highlights his Judaism in his films much more so than Speilberg does.

::sigh:: You just don't GET it, do you?

Yes, the CONTENT of the film ITSELF is NOT "low key". I've only seen the film once, a long time ago, and you are correct that John Belushi is indeed a loud and bombastic guy and it comes across in the movie.

But compared to it's competition in 1979, the MARKETING and appeal for 1941 was pretty low-key. Think about the "successful" films that year. It went up against Aliens, The Amityville Horror, The Black Hole, Rocky II, Moonraker, The Muppet Movie, Apocalypse Now, etc., etc. It couldn't even compete with cult classics like Life of Brian.

Hold on there a minute, Metatron1970! I thought that Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, and Raiders of the Lost Ark were excellent. Munich, ET and The Post were good, too. I have seen all these above-mentioned movies, so don't get feeling too snotty, or virtuous. Also, I happen to be a non-religious Jewish woman, so don't go calling me anti-semitic, either.

Over and out.

You're an idiot, plain and simple.

"Always", "1941", and "Empire of the Sun" are awful films, but WSS has been greeted with raves. It's financial failure has no bearing on its quality as a film.

reply

No, my friend, YOU are an idiot. Plain and simple. The reality is TONS of awful films that are rightly seen as garbage today and didn't stand the test of time were nevertheless given overwhelmingly "rave reviews" from professional critics at the time they were released. For example, the 2014 biblical-adaptation-in-name-only Noah.

Speilberg himself is no stranger to that, critics gave rave reviews to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull back in 2008, even though everyone knows its crap (and it has been mocked since Day One for its infamous "nuke the fridge" scene). I'm proud to say I've never seen that crapfest. The only difference is Indy 4 managed to con enough viewers into buying tickets (I guess nostalgia for Indiana Jones was huge) that it made a nice profit at the box office... something that Woke Side Story will obviously never accomplish!

I've never seen "Always" or "Empire of the Sun", but they're starting to sound pretty good compared to the SJW-pandering crap Speilberg is churning out now. I guess even the BAD movies of 1980s era Speilberg look good next to the "good" movies of virtue signaling "woke" Speilberg!

I bet if they re-released "Always" or "Empire", either film would kick WSS's butt at the box office!

reply

Lol! Thanks for confirming the fact you are an idiot.
