NO NO NO
Do not remake this film. I have seen it a dozen times and never get tired of it. Nothing could ever beat the original West Side Story.

shareHi, slimone! I'm a devout fan of the original 1961 film version of West Side Story. It's my all time favorite movie, hands down, I've lost count of how many times I've seen it, and I'm also a fan who never tires of seeing this great golden oldie-but-keeper of a classic movie-musical over and over again!
It's especially gladdening to see that there are other devout fans of the 1961 film version of West Side Story. Frankly, I thought that remaking/rebooting this great film was a lousy idea from the get-go, and I still feel that way!
I'm against re-makes and/or reboots of older classic films generally, because they never, ever have the charm and personality of the originals, plus they generally come out rather dreadful. I feel especially strongly against a remake/reboot of a film such as West Side Story, however.
This is going to be "Woke Side Story". It's going to suck like Hoover. The silver lining is that it will be forgotten within a year, probably within a couple of months, while the 1961 film remains a classic.
shareYou may be right, liscarkat. Here's hoping that's the case. I myself, am against remakes/reboots of older classic films, but I feel especially strongly against a reboot/remake of a great, golden oldie-but-keeper of a classic film such as the original 1961 film version of West Side Story.
I know what you mean when you say that the remake of the film West Side Story will be forgotten in with a couple of months or a year. The 1961 film always will remain a classic.
The remakes of "King Kong", Hitchcock's "Psycho", and "Planet of the Apes" went over like lead balloons--inotherwords, not well at all. The re-makes of all three of these films lasted in the theatres less than a month! Wouldn't it be cool if that turned out to be the case with the reboot/remake of the film West Side Story!
Did you see the original Haunting, mplo? It had Russ Tamblyn as one of the stars, it came out a few years after West Side Story (I believe it had the same director too), and it was a genuinely creepy, terrifying movie. It's considered a very good horror/suspense classic.
The remake of that movie sucked big time.
I did see "The Haunting" on TV about a year or so ago, and it was kind of cool, although rather eerie. Russ Tamblyn was good in that one, "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", and "Tom Thumb", as well. "The Haunting" was directed by Robert Wise, but I'm not sure who directed either "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers" or "Tom Thumb'.
shareTime proved you right on it being “Woke Side Story,” liscarkat.
shareI totally agree with you here, slimone! Well said. Thanks.
shareI feel the same way! No remakes!!! Nothing could come close to the original.
shareYou're right, slimone! The original 1961 film version of West Side Story is what it is--and nobody, including Steve Spielberg, should've even started this reboot-remake of such a fabulous oldie-but-keeper of a classic movie-musical that won ten well deserved Academy Awards, including Best Picture, back in the fall of 1961, when it first came out into the movie theatres.
shareI agree. This film should NOT be remade!
shareNo! It absolutely SHOULDN'T be remade/rebooted--at all, by anybody, including Steve Spielberg. Having said this and agreed with you all, I believe that the best way to demonstrate how you feel is to vote your pocketbook and boycott the upcoming reboot/remake of the original film version of West Side Story--inotherwords, NOT go to see it when it hits the movie theatres at around Christmastime of 2020. Boycotting Spielberg's upcoming reboot/remake of the 1961 film version of West Side Story--inotherwords, NOT going to see it when it comes to the movie theatres at Christmastime 2020, is the best way to show one's feelings!
shareI would never go see the remake in the theater. I don't go the movies anymore anyway since there's Netflix, Amazon, etc. I won't see the remake at home either.
shareWhat are you people talking about?
It's not like the new version will somehow supersede the original, and the original will be somehow be erased.
You prefer the original? Fine. Stick with it. You dont like the idea of a remake? Fine...dont watch it.
Boycott? Seriously? Yeah...you and maybe a few hundred people at best. That will make a difference...
Job done.
Yeh, Roguemail! I do stand by my opinions of a reboot/remake of this great old original 1961 film version of West Side Story, which is a great, golden oldie-but-keeper of a classic movie-musical, and I also stand by my plans to boycott Spielberg's upcoming version of the film West Side Story, no matter what you or anybody else on here says or thinks. What makes you think that this upcoming reboot/remake of the film West Side Story will be so wonderful and will attract so many people, and what makes you think that there won't be more than a few hundred people who do decide not to go and see Spielberg's reboot/remake of it? Your sarcasm is disgustingly rude, Roguemail, plus it's totally uncalled for.
I don't care who's doing the reboot/remake of the original 1961 film version of West Side Story; the original can't be beat by anybody, including Spielberg.
But why do you say they are trying to beat the original?
That's not the intention of a remake at all. It's just a new version.
Why can't you just ignore it and stick with the original?
I DO plan to ignore Spielberg's upcoming reboot/remake of the original 1961 film version of West Side Story! THAT is my point! The search engines should at least have the good, common sense, and decency to give more weight to the original 1961 film version of West Side Story, and help provide fans of the film West Side Story with more of a choice as to whether to see the reboot/remake of West Side Story or the original 1961 film version of West Side Story in the movie theatres.
I do not want the original 1961 film version of West Side Story to only be available on TV, or for purchasing/renting on DVD, video, or Blu-Ray. I want the original film version of West Side Story to also be available to be played in movie theatres, even if it's only on occasion, because seeing the original 19612 film version of West Side Story is much, much more of a treat when it's viewed on a great big, wide screen, in a real movie theatre, with the lights down low, with the whole experience being shared with a bunch of other people, whether one knows them or not.
Roguemail,
I think these people are anti-SJW trolls who've never seen the movie or the show and are embarking on a mass disinfo campaign. They will often target IPs that are about racism and diversity and start pretending to be diehard fans who are boycotting for political reasons. Some major clues:
1. Repeatedly calling an adaptation of a broadway show a remake/reboot of the movie, to confuse newbies into not understanding that the movie was itself an adaptation and not an "original."
2. Ranting that this version will be "woke" version of the musical, when the musical was the very epitome of wokeness.
3. Cutting and pasting the same exact response over and over again.
Oh, shut up, atomicgirl. In the first place, I happen to be a straight Jewish white baby-boomer female who's a devout fan of the 1961 film version of West Side Story.
Secondly, I've observed photos of Spielberg's upcoming version of this film, and I intensely dislike what I've seen so far.
Thirdly, I've always been against remakes/reboots of older classic films, generally.
Fourth, people like you are so "woke" that you're already staggering around, not knowing what you're saying.
I was taken to see a re-release of the film in a theater in Brooklyn when I was about 8 in 1969 and have seen it more times than I can count since then.
Sometimes a movie comes out that becomes such a classic, whether it depicts a certain way of life or whether it's particularly heart wrenching - whatever the reason, it becomes so special to people that the idea that it could be remade is really infuriating. Gone With the Wind and Citizen Kane are two examples of films that, IMO, should never be remade. They were done so perfectly that it would be an affront to redo them.
West Side Story is also one of those movies. Maybe you can't understand that and that's OK. You're entitled to your opinion on remakes just as we are. But to make such foolish statements about trolls trying to confuse people and anti-SJW's is really paranoid, insulting, and childish.
BTW Broadway plays come and go and are remade over and over again. That's a whole different matter, not relevant. I'm not talking about Broadway, just the movie.
I still prefer to see movies, especially great golden oldie-but-keeper classics such as West Side Story, on a great big, wide screen, in a real movie theatre, with the lights down low, and to share the experience with a whole bunch of other people, whether I know them or not. As I have put it on several other posts on this category, I plan on voting my pocketbook and not going to see Spielberg's reboot/remake of the film West Side Story when it comes out into the movie theatres at around Christmastime of 2020. If some people think I'm too closed-minded for their tastes, so be it.
shareI totally agree with you-100%, slimone! Way to go, and well said!
