Lucas Medical

5 minites in i found mysrlf asking: how is it that Lucas, Kansas had a population of 393 but has a hospital? I'm from small-town USA. It doesn't work like that.

reply

I wondered too. What a slick, state of the art medical facility in little Lucas, Kansas!

Could it be the hospital is nearby and part of a larger community?

Can give you numerous examples of that happening here in the U.S.

I went to High School in a Town of officially 2,100 that supported a Hospital...

if the Lucas, KS of the show is closer to 1400, than the real world Lucas of 400 they could feasibly have one...

and that's not accounting for semantics

I used to work for a rural hospital. You would be surprised where they plunk one down. More often than not it's a level 3 trauma hospital where they just stabilize a patient and ship them to a facility that can handle the patients issue.

It can mean life or death for a patient that is 3 hours away from a larger place.

If it makes you feel better, Cedar Vale, Kansas has a population of 536, and has a hospital. If you want to go even smaller, Greely, Kansas has a population of 296 and has access to a hospital just 10 miles away.
