Alright, in the books Tip was turned into a boy permanently by Mombi. In this one, tip is given a daily dose of something, not because he is a trans or because he actually has something wrong with him, but because Mombi fakes that he has an illness. He believes himself to be sick. Tip is perfectly happy being a boy and did not experience confusion.
So...Tip runs from his abusive caregiver, and is freaked out when he turns into a girl. And he tries to get the potion, not because he is actually a transgender, but because being a boy is what he knows.
Is anyone else bothered by this? Somehow, I think tip's dysphoria is more a result of Tip being in an abuse situation and not knowing how to discontinue an abuse pattern. Not transgender.
I actually got to thinking about Tip's situation being like the kids who have a particular genetic issue. Forgive me, I do not recall the name of it, where you're born seemingly female with slightly underdevelopted sexual features, so you grow up a girl/female, then puberty hits and BAM, you develop male genitalia, a deeper voice, facial hair, etc. Tip is just has this backwards of this genetic condition.
As for the relationship with Mombi, I would say that has to be part of what is making Tip so freaked out right now. You've got this idea that Mombi did take care of Tip- feeding, bathing, changing diapers, tucking in at night, etc. So there is an attachment, even if it is reluctant or because Tip had no one else. Plus, there's how now Tip is learning that Tip started out female and Mombi is the one who gave Tip the elixir that made Tip feel/appear male, and without it, Tip is regressing back to Tip's birth form of female.
Then add in, at some point it has to have hit Tip-- why did Mombi do this? What would make you fake a child's sex to be the opposite of what they were born as, why would you hide them from all the world, and why would you lie to the child about everything? Heck, Tip might even wonder what name Tip had at birth- was it Lizzie or maybe she hadn't been named before Mombia got the baby and gave the baby both a name and the elixir. Plus, Jack kisses Tip, and for all we know Jack may not have cared if Tip was male or female, or that may have been how Jack's feelings shifted when Tip suddenly became female, so Jack may be almost as confused as Tip or he may be where he doesn't care what body holds Tip as long as it's Tip inside. But either way, that kiss clearly freaked Tip out and Jack's attempts to soothe and calm his friend, had the opposite of their desired effect.
There's a female athlete like that in my country. She won lots of awards and trophies until she hit puberty. All her awards were disregarded since she was in fact a guy.
Tip is really Princess Ozma, and Mombi was hiding her by turning her into a boy. She was actually protecting Ozma from the Wizard and/or the Witches. But I thought that Ozma was younger. Look at some of the classic illustrations in the books.
We did a ballet version of Oz with Ozma as one of the characters and tried to make her costume as authentic as possible with regard to the illustrations.
But if they are going to age Dorothy, they might as well age Ozma as well.
