"My brother insisted I include this part"

I have to say, I was really surprised by this movie. It was much better than I was anticipating. Clever, entertaining and with a real thoughtful emotional story too. Some great character moments, including that little tag at the end.

When that bit plays over the end credits, it's obviously goofy with the kid rapping and he wanted it included to showcase his "talent"....but if you notice, this sister is brushing her hair looking right in the mirror. That's why he wanted that part included, so she would see that. I thought that was sweet and subtle.

Good little movie. This is the sort of stuff M. Night is suited for. Quirky, well produced little b-movies.

You have remarkably low standards.

Excellent point! Thanks for sharing!

I noticed she was looking in the mirror too, excellent callback that prob went over people's heads

That's the signpost up ahead. Your next stop......The Twilight Zone

While watching, at first I thought... oh my goodness, maybe the little girl is dead and only the little boy and the old people can see her or something, as Sixth Sense guy was involved in the film, which is why she couldn't look at herself in the mirror, but I am glad I was wrong.

I think rap & hiphop are an utter blight upon the cultures of the world, but having said that, yes, I agree that the movie did include a few very nice surprises/choices that set it apart from other films of its ilk. Your insight into that scene is exactly correct.

M. Night's script did require a little bit of work for me. First, I had to tolerate the rap music, an element which made this kid extremely obnoxious to me. Okay. The kid raps. Maybe he is, in fact, obnoxious. I can deal with that (like Roger Ebert used to say, "it's not what a movie is about, but how is it about it."). Second, the children's dialogue was too self-aware, ironic, and wise. This was the harder requisite for me as it spoke to the believability of the piece. Ultimately, the touches like the ones you pointed out above won me over. Is it a perfect movie? Not by any stretch, but it does make several very nice stylistic and story choices which gave me hope that we have not seen the last great film from this director.

Haha That kid dosent represent rap at all and I'm curious to what you listen to? Not trying to be mean, I'm very interested in what you find great musically?

reply

I think even if this kid was a representation of good rap some people would still find it annoying. I personally did not mind his lack of skills and thought it was cute.

Did the guy say the kid represented rap? I didn't see that in his post. Rap is great but you are not going to convince too many people that it's actually music. Even though it is. They just don't care.

reply

I don't know what good rap is but I do know I usually have difficulty understanding what is being said because of the equal emphasis on each word in a monotone. I'm not saying it's not a type of music, but I think that sometimes there is a message that I am missing because I can't digest the words as delivered in that format. That said, I was somehow able to pick up most of what the boy was saying in his rap music and I'm not sure why it seemed clearer to me.

reply

I thought the same thing. Maybe that is why it didn't bother me too much when he did it.

Rap and hip hop are not music. They're... sounds at best, and monotone noise at worst.

The last rap by the boy was obviously recorded after the false-grandparents adventure was over. The girl was definitely aware of the fact that she is able to look into mirror again. There was no need to remind her of that through a video.

She was unaware that she was NOT looking in the mirror in the first place. There is no reason to assume she noticed the opposite. It is 100% the reason for that final scene. It is a very clear example of setup/payoff, directly speaking to character and story.
