Most unrealistic part...

So the kids were Skyping with Mom on a camera that had previously been covered with oven cleaner and was probably not crystal clear. The kid aimed the laptop camera at grandparents. They were on the other side of the back yard. Through a glass window. Mom sees this and instantly tells the kids "Those aren't your grandparents."
She saw a fuzzy image of two old people from across the yard via Skype...and these were people she hadn't even seen in 15 years. And she INSTANTLY knew it?
No way.
At least extend the scene where she says "Kids, I need a closer look."

You can't save this movie with any amount of band aids. Shamman lost his knack years ago.

reply

Ha. Yeah, I noticed that as well. She saw them for two seconds through a window from far away on a computer...doesn't seem realistic she'd have such an immediate ephiphany.

reply

Yep.

That you went into the movie expecting an actual documentary. What are you autistic or something?

reply

Huh? No one expected a documentary.

Well, for one the girl cleaned it better so it was easier to see. Then, I'd know MY parents anywhere, so maybe it was instinct. Could be they were different heights, weights, body types, those sorts of physical attributes that you'd know about your parents.

reply

Not as unrealistic as standing/waiting around for hours with the people you know aren't your grandparents, but you make a good point.

Especially given that the mom hasn't seen them in 15 years.

But I'll admit this flaw sailed over my head.

More troubling -- the way the mom took another 60 seconds to blurt out the fact they weren't the parents. And then failed to leave a voicemail for the cops about the situation. Who somehow didn't have any emergency answer service.

That drove me crazy, when the mom kept saying, "Babies, stop. You have to listen to me" eighteen times before spitting out the twist. They are f$%$&*& listening! Just say it so they can get out ASAP!

I didn't understand the point of that, from a film-making perspective. I guess it was supposed to build suspense? I was just getting really frustrated.

reply

Yes, and if the local one-man police station doesn't answer the phone, you call the county sheriff immediately. Or FBI. Or anyone!
I liked the film a lot and wanted a less-contrived ending.

In all fairness, that IS realistic. It's happened to me several times were people will repeat, "Liston to me, this is really important. You have to hear what I'm about to say. Liston to what's about to come out of my mouth because you have to hear this. Hearing this is important..." and so on before actually getting to the point. This is understandable in the movie because she's close to panicking and doesn't quite have the right words. In real life people will get into that same repetitive panicky stage over almost nothing. Mark Twain said it best: "The main difference between fact and fiction is that fiction has to be credible."

Or how she arrives with the police after saying its such a long journey and that she would phone them on the way.

Did the police wait until she arrived? Did she stop phoning the police and decide to go to the police station.

They are kids. They are naturally too terrified to think rationally with crazy adults. Plus, they're kids. They don't know what to do or how to do it.

And the small town mentality was perfect to give the story isolation, making everything feasible.

Get off your soapbox while I play you a tune on the tiniest violin.

reply

Not unrealistic. The girl cleaned it...

Spray oven cleaner on you phone's camera and update us.

They were able to get most of it off and I'm pretty sure she cloud tell. When we see a picture of the real GP's later on, they look nothing like the kooky spook-a-spooks that were posing as them.
