What would have happened if *spoilers*

They never managed to contact their mother and never found out those weren't their grandparents? Would the old people have admitted they weren't who they thought they were, or let them believe their grandparents were trying to kill them?

The old man makes it pretty clear that they were going to kill them at the end of the weekend. That was their plan all along. Not sure whether they would have told them that they weren't their grandparents. What purpose would that serve?

Yep, my impression too. Three signs: (1) the way they were saying "it's sad it's coming to an end, (2) the way the old man tells the boy in the end that he never really liked him, but primarily - (3) the fact they hung the young lady on the tree in clear view. (1) could have been truly just sadness about the kids leaving, and (2) could be because the old man figured out the girl went to the basement and their cover is blown, but the only reason (3) could have happened was they were planning to kill the kids all along.
