Plot hole: the police? (Spoilers)

Mom called Masonville police and got message that their one officer was on a call. She says she'll call from her car as she drives what must be hours to get there. Why not call the State Police to get them there in an emergency? Instead, she and two police cars arrive together hours later. So in the hours it took mom to get there, she couldn't get the local or State police to go to the house any earlier than when she finally arrived?

reply

Their weak explanation for this was the mom's passing comment of "stupid hick town" after hanging up, implying the town was too old school to have a sophisticated protocol set in place. With that said, 911 would have been the number to call, obviously, so even with the "hick" comment, it doesn't really cover the plot hole.

911? She was hours away, so calling her nearest 911 would be about as good as calling her grandparent's local police directly.

That being said, small towns typically operate under Sheriff control. So, assuming this town is VERY small, it's perfectly plausible for them to have no emergency operator working 24/7. They most likely rotate deputies to remain at the station and take calls.

There's no plot hole here.

Its plausible that the specific town might not have anyone on duty at that moment, but for every surrounding town to be the same way? She should have called the town, and then every surrounding town, and then 911 in her town to have them assist her in getting help to that house.
