Inspired by Jonestown mass suicide?

I wonder if this film is loosely based on the Jonestown incident?

Or did the director intended to just make The Veil film as its own thing for horror fans?

Thanks!

Inspired but definitely quite a different story.

The inspiration seems obvious, but the story is definitely different (as there are supernatural elements in The Veil). The 2013 found footage thriller The Sacrament is more close to Jonestown in terms of story.

reply

I'd say the spiritual side was more like the Heavens Gate cult who believed they were shedding their mortal selves to join a comet flying close to earth. Different sure, but the leaving of ones body was the same,

reply

Exactly,at the beginning of the movie,it clearly states ´` The Heavens Veil`´ cult.so it has nothing to do with Jim Jones and his cult in Guyana, which had 900 members kill themselves.

reply

It was a definite hybrid of more than one cult with Jonestown being predominant.

Name: Jim Jacobs

Appearance: Jim Jones was well known for the dark sunglasses

Location: California (Jim Jones was in Northern California before migrating to Guyana)

Era: '78-'84 (Jonestown massacre 1979)

Home: Jim Jones originally from Indiana and Jim Jacobs referenced the same

Set up: Outdoors (Jonestown suicide/massacre was outdoors)

Speech: Jim Jones was known for long winded fiery sermons and even stepping on the Bible whereas Jim Jacobs tossed the Bible.

I read the book "Raven" which is the Jim Jones story that's how I know this stuff.

View_and_review gets it. Also, not a bunk bed, purple shroud, or Nike to be seen.

So because it "clearly states" heavens veil on a fictional movie its nothing to do with jim jones? nice logic there.
this has plenty to do with Jonestown its just sad that people get away with jumping on the history of 900 people who killed themselves to sell some movies.

his name is jim and he wears big dark glasses iconic of mr jones
same era and outdoor forest camp type setting
it starts by mentioning the fact the adults and children died after drinking a drink given by jim.

So yeah its a lot like Jonestown. The fact they went for the bs story like its real footage and decided to use jim and the poisoned drink in that part is quite disgusting so I wont be watching the movie it isn't worth it

Logic is not your friend.

Less Jonestown, more like Heavens Gate with a bit of Ruby Ridge and Waco thrown in. A suicide/death cult where the frontal assault by the federal police result in significant loss of life.

reply

I think the Jonestown was the obvious inspiration as the guy is actually named Jim Jonas and the whole cult is pretty much similar in outcome to Jonestown and takes place around the same time. I agree though that the sacrament was much more closely tied to Jonestown. This they just use Jonestown as the inspiration and put a little mix of other cults in there as well, but it also reminded me a little bit of the fictional story flatliners where people were trying to kill themselves and then revive themselves so they could get a glimpse of the afterlife. That's what I think is the major difference from the reality of Jonestown. The goal wasn't to kill everyone but to temporarily kill them and then revive them but then the police showed up and everyone ended up dying in a similar manner to Jonestown. And then they just thrown a bunch of supernatural stuff as well to make it more classically horror.

Oh no. No, he's not. Actually, he's not at all.

You mean Waco where David Koresh assaulted women and abused children and held them hostage?

That Waco never existed. Nice try though, spreading BATF propaganda to justify the murder of innocents. You should be ashamed of yourself.

That's obvious

The director thought "ok, how can I mix the Jonestown massacre with the supernatural and make a really shtty film?"

And he accomplished his mission.

Maybe you should googling audio recording of Jonestown mass suicide ,, it has much in common with jim jacobs speech in this movie. I suggest open on youtube.

reply

Very true huntnnine.

Jim Jones repeatedly rebuffs the pleas of a woman on behalf of the children. Jim Jacobs essentially did the same thing but physically restrained the woman intervening on behalf of the kids.

You’re kidding right? Half the guy’s lines are straight out of Jim Jones mouth. They really didn’t do much to hide the fact it was all about Jonestown. Don ‘t believe me? Here is the link to a documentary with live video, live audio, of Jim Jones. Tada.

It sickens you to know how they just changed one or two details, but that guy? That was a real guy. Only the real guy was a bit scarier because he was nuts from the get go, and found a bunch of broken people, and took advantage of their brokenness. On top of which, after watching all of those people die slowly and painfully . . . was too much of a coward to go out the same way. Wither he was shot in the head or he did it himself doesn’t matter. If that jackass really believed in his senseless, insane rhetoric, he would have been the first one to drink that swill.
