400 years ago Taiwan [also called Formosa] belonged to indigenous people, then the Dutch and then the Spanish, and the Japan, then China's Ching Dynasty held it for about 2 centuries, then in 1895 China lost Taiwan to Japan, then after WWII the Nationalist Chinese government fled to Taiwan from the Communists and ran Taiwan as a military dictatorship until it became a very vibrant democracy.
