Ed Wood
Will this movie be similar to Tim Burton's Ed Wood, which starred Johnny Depp as the talentless yet ambitious filmmaker?

shareThat's pretty much what I've gathered it's about it.

I'm hoping this movie is like a modern Ed Wood. If this movie is nearly as good as Ed Wood, we'd all be in for a treat.

No. Burton's Ed Wood is largely fictional and shot in an extremely stylish way that is a throwback to old horror/sci-fi films. It's a great film and very funny, but probably nothing like this movie.
Tommy will more likely be the second lead with the story being filtered through Greg's impression of what is going. Ed Wood made you sympathize and root for Ed despite knowing how bad his films would turn out. Disaster Artist will probably aim to have you laugh AT Tommy and his ineptness.
Yeah, the more I think about it, the less I'm expecting this to resemble Ed Wood in terms of tone. That film was indeed highly stylized to feel like the horror/sci-fi films of the 50s (which is why I love that film so much) and celebrates the passion Wood had for his craft.
I'm predicting this will be somewhat edgier, displaying how weird of a guy Tommy Wiseau is rather than portraying him as a sympathetic figure that we root for.
