She didn't mess it up. It wasn't her fault. She knew that Abby was the killer and didn't want to arrest Ben, but her superiors forced the case to be closed when Ben confessed.

That's right, she hardly messed up. It looked like it was Ben, and with him confessing, practically insisting they arrest him, the higher-ups wanted the case closed though Cornell wanted the right person apprehended, not just anyone.

She did eventually arrest the correct murderer, too bad that Ben had to die in prison while his sociopathic daughter roamed free with her mother for 17 months. He made Cornell arrest him, even though she practically begged him to tell her the truth (she knew it wasn't him by this point). With him pleading guilty, she had no choice, due to her higher-ups wanting an arrest. He was probably killed by other prisoners, as they don't take kindly to child killers and/or pedophiles (not that he was accused of the latter).
