So, the moral of this TV show in a nutshell is:

If you're a 12 year old girl and hear parents fighting, it's okay to kill a child by bashing a flashlight 6 times over the head. And if you're the father of that child, you must confess and take responsibility for the murder.

That's what I got out of it anyway.. I would actually have different views if Abby only hit him once and it was on accident. But, she smashed his head over 6 times with a flashlight, that's intent not an accident.

reply

I think the first five times she hit him was an accident. The sixth one however was a gravity reflex motion..

LMAO

reply

The whole parents fighting thing was an excuse. She planned it long before that.

reply

Purposely hitting someone on the head even once cannot be considered an accident. She had planned that he would drown in the river but when he ran she hit him. That part was not planned but it was no accident. Her explanation was a way of trying to absolve herself of guilt.

reply

Don't be fooled. She didn't feel guilt or want forgiveness. She just wanted to be believed so she could get away with it.

reply

This. Abby is a sociopaths and sociopaths do not feel guilt. They can mimic it, but can't feel it.

reply

I meant being guilty of murder.

reply

I think there is a certain inconsistency. She has no problems framing her dad and making him take the blame. But I don't get her motive. Which advantage does she have from killing the boy which makes sense for someone who does not give a crap about other people's wellbeing?
But only being a sociopath makes the way she acted in all scenes so far plausible. If she had an ounce of coscience, she would not have acted differently.

reply

Exactly, just ridiculous that her parents believe it is an accident because she said she only hit him once. You hit someone over the head with something how can that be an accident? If he fell and hit his head on a rock that's a different story.

Putting yourself in prison for the rest of your life for someone else that has committed murder is ridiculous. I don't care who your covering for. Ben's daughter is a sick killer, he is helping NO ONE taking the blame. She might end up killing his other daughter or her mother. Her only being 12 she might have been able to get the help she needs and be free while still young. She surely wasn't going to be sent to prison. I hated that ending even with the extra 5 minutes they showed online especially if Ben got killed in prison.

Ben thinks he was being a good father and doing what he did was the worst thing he could have did for his family.

reply

Concur! A very disappointing ending and "moral to the story". The good guy (Ben), albeit dumb as a post, makes the BIGGEST mistake/ decision of his hapless life, ends up in jail and was probably killed by an inmate. Christy, who hasn't/ won't show one iota of remorse for Ben's incarceration and death, doesn't need a divorce as she has everything and when she runs out of money she can call Sam for "a shoulder to cry on" and live happily ever after as long as she maintains her looks and wears sexy lingerie.

It's not just a saying: "Nice guys DO finish last"!

The whole parents fighting thing was an excuse. She planned it long before that.
Cornell implied that she had planned the murder before hearing the fight. But what would her motive have been?

reply

Abby was still jealous of the relationship between Tom and Ben. She wanted him all to herself.

reply

By that reasoning, she probably would have murdered her sister and mother eventually, which could have made for an interesting season 2.

reply

I would've love to see this insane little girl just murdering people

reply

Nowhere did the show state it was OK to kill and murder someone. I hate it when people blame the media/tv/movies for their actions because "I saw it on TV!!!" It's a fictional television show, for entertainment purposes. Not to give you ideas how to murder someone.

reply

^^ I think the OP was being sarcastic.

"Could you please get your head out of your ass? It's not a hat!" - Pitch Perfect

reply

But Abby got away with it - and the ADA didn't care, either - so, what is your point???

(Do you understand the generic concept of "moral of the story?")

reply

Abby did not get away with it.

"Economy or style? Style!"

reply

What? Based on the online only 14 months later clip?

I think any good lawyer could mount an excellent defense - starting with "her father admitted to this crime and is unfortunately now dead so that he cannot even retract his confession, if he wanted too." (Reasonable doubt, indeed!) At best you will have her sister's testimony completely contradicted by the mother's testimony - and again Mom will be pointing to Dad as the guilty person. Good luck to the Detective getting that same (or any other) DA to bring Abby to trial given what we all know as the witnesses and circumstantial evidence available.

I thought the primary moral was "women are crazy."

(Christy, Jess, Abby, Nicole, Elaine, Natalie (normal 16 yo girl boy-crazy crazy), the MD's wife, Linda (CSI tech), Cornell's daughter, and even Cornell herself was a tad strange...;-)

Secondarily - "life's not fair" and "nice guys finish last."

reply

Don't call your kid Monkey. Monkeys do stupid things

reply

That too - very strange actually and maybe what drove Abby batsh#t crazy.

Either that or Christy's genes...

Obviously Christy merely aborted the wrong baby. Hindsight is SO 20/20.

reply

No! Ya'll got it all wrong. 

The moral of the story is: How to Get Away with Murder (2014) by Abby Crawford.

A good laugh and a long sleep are the two best cures for anything.

reply

Ah - you agree with the OP.

Maybe that's it.

(Wonder if Christy allows Abby to sleep in her bed, now - after that last car conversation? Karma IS a bit of a crazy byitch, herself ;-)

reply

And the thing is that Abby was WAY closer to Ben than she was to Christy. The first thought that popped into my head when Cornell told Ben that Abby was a sociopath was that Christy was a goner!

reply

I was thinking: whoa, watch your back Natalie! since she's the only that wanted to tell the truth. Christy agreed with Ben's idea of taking the rap.

So, maybe the moral of teh story is: It's the parents fault for everything. You're not responsible--mommy & daddy are. I thought it was so lame Ben kept blaming himself for...? the way he raised Abby? or maybe, he/they knew something wasn't 'right' about her, but looked the other way years ago, when they should have gotten her help?

Can you imagine what Ben & Christy were thinking after he heard Tom had been Bludgeoned to death, and Christy got that tidbit of conversation in the car? Suurrpprrise!! Oh, boy...I think we stepped in it, Now!

reply

I find that once you start beating someone, you don't stop. The joy and excitement take over.

reply

Have you seen the jonbenet documentary? This is very similar.
