It's still a thing because lots of people are watching it and advertisers are paying money to advertise during it.
Like any other tv show.
Shows get cancelled because nobody watches them and advertisers pull out.
Simple really.

I agree with you. I would also add that sometimes networks cancel shows with decent, but far from spectacular ratings because they think they can come up with something else that will get better ratings.
