Did it never occur to them that the INS might check the legitimacy of their marriage? Happy could keep her maiden name and claim it's for feminism or independence but they should have had one address, a shared bank account, credit card, etc. Oh, and tell your close friends about it.

My guess is that after the initial check (from an elderly man who was about to retire) they thought the case was closed and that no one would look into again, unless they had a reason to look into it, which Walter and Happy thought was unlikely. You can explain the two address as one is thier living space, and the other is Happy's workshop/storage space. I'm with you on the shared bank account and credit card. They probably didn't tell thier friends because they didn't think it mattered/was important/a big deal.

Also, given Walter's genius and the unique skills he brings, he'd get an O-1 visa easily, and wouldn't have needed Happy or anyone.
The whole plotline is embarrassing and belongs in a 70s sitcom. These guys would have no problem working the system, if not just outright hacking the system. And these introverted super geniuses would not be expected to maintain the illusion of traditional marriage anyhow, as none of them can maintain normal relationships in the first place. It's all silly.
