Irish Stereotype

I couldn't believe the stereotyping that went on during the last episode. The Irish were portrayed:
1. as thick headed
2. overly religious
3. engaging in fisticuffs at a moment's notice
4. ill educated
5. intensely angry

I mean these are true, but for crying out loud...the only thing missing was a pub every 20 feet.

This show got a second season and Firefly only 12 episodes...long live Ron Glass!!

While the five characteristics you described may be true for the characters on the show, I don't think it had anything to do with them being Irish. Besides, I don't think paying proper respects to the dead is being overly religious. Every culture has its own customs.

reply

Yeah,"overly religious" because there was a Priest in the episode and they were paying their respects to the dead. That's "overly religious" by today's standards!!

They were being stubborn because they just didn't trust Walter's deductions based on his past mistakes. Not a particularly Irish trait. They were just being cautious.

I didn't see it as Irish Stereotypes but as more rural Ireland. They weren't in a major city like Dublin, but instead a small town or village.
