This movie has always reminded me so much of Flash Gordon. Pretty sure I actually saw Ragnarok not long after I watched Flash Gordon for the first time. That's probably the reason I liked it so much.
Also, I think Thor: Ragnarok stands very well on its own. You could throw out all the MCU elements and it would still be a good movie.
It's a fair comparison, both are silly movies in a Fantasy setting that pretends to be Sci-Fi, and both area great fun. But I think "T:R" is by far the better movie, because it's intentionally funny until it becomes intentionally awesome, while "FG" was unintentionally funny.
I totally forgot there's going to be a remake. Although it's based on a comic right? That gives it more of an excuse to be explored at least. If anyone should direct it, I think Taika Waititi is the right person. He must like Flash Gordon.
Yea as a matter of fact, comparisons to Flash Gordon were made by many back when Ragnarok came out (positively so). And as one might’ve guessed, FG was as an inspiration to Thor: Ragnarok along with other 70’s/80’s fantasy movies, especially the likes of Big Trouble in Little China.
But yeah, this remains an awesome film. And about the MCU elements being stripped away, I agree with (though I would say the same about a bunch of other installments in the MCU).
This was really a post right out of own head and wanting to know other people's opinions on it. I actually think I may have said something a while back about it and other people saying it. Then forgetting and posting this lol.
I told my dad it reminded me of FG and he said yeah, it's inspired by many 80s movies.
