November release vs. Justice League

There are no superhero movies scheduled between 7/7/17 (Spiderman) and Thor in November. Then Justice League comes 2 weeks later. Too late to change now, but I wonder if either studio wishes they chose an August release instead of crowding November with 2 big superhero movies. GOTG did great in August, and even crappy Suicide Squad did well with no competition.

Wow, Justice League is a November release? Damn in that case the teaser was EARLY.

reply

Yep, and a full Wonder Woman trailer, also very early (June release). They start the hype early at WB.

Which is a problem to me, ad nauseam is very real and can bring upon a high expectation for some. Suicide Squad was showing teasers/trailers/tv spots from the super bowl up to release. That was very annoying I even remember BvS and Suicide Squad having tv spots the same time, stupid to promote two movies at the same time.

I prefer Marvels approach where they don't kick up advertising until 1-2 months before release. Dr.Strange tv spots are not on and if they are you barely see them, I am excited for the movie but don't have unreal expectations because I have not been hit with footage all the time. Ant-Man didn't have tv spots the same time as AoU. Movies like Avengers will get ads earlier and more time they are major thing and have proven that. Suicide Squad is not a big time team and did not need to be on tv all the time.

They certainly hyped a lot of people into seeing Suicide Squad - which would be good marketing strategy if it were a good film, to expose people and get them excited about the DCEU. Instead I think SS turned a lot of people off to the DCEU. I think it's a result of their "catch up to the MCU" mentality.

It make quite a profit, I'd say it was good marketing.

reply

Who knows how profitable it was, maybe they spent an extra 50 million hyping it just to make an extra 50 million at the BO. But in any case, they should have saved the hype for a movie that was actually good, because now when they overhype a better movie, people will be less likely to be persuaded.

Quite a profit is debatable, sure it made a profit but for the hype they gave it I think they wanted close to a billion. Deadpool made more on a far cheaper budget and that was quite a profit.

Yeah Thor is hung-out-to-dry by Marvel yet again. Last time the Hunger Games, this time DC's Justice League. It'll probably under-perform again with detractors ignoring the big film coming 2 weeks after it cutting into it's profits. Yeah it'll be great, can't wait to hear them. All I know is that this new Spider-Man reboot better make a lot of money.

Depends on how much traction the stupid Zendaya nontroversy gains on reddit .

What if Thor comes out with RT 80% Fresh, and JL is 40% Rotten? The ways things are going I don't think that's much of a stretch. Anyways, my OP was not about who would win or lose, rather that BOTH will lose by being just 2 weeks apart. I wish either of them was coming out in August instead, and I wonder if either studio would wish the same thing. Or do they actually want the head-to-head competition?

I think Justice League was always scheduled for a November release. Thor's original release date was in July I believe. Thor was pushed back when Marvel acquired the Rights to do a Spider-Man film. Captain Marvel's date was pushed back too, but can't remember the date that was originally attached to that film, although I think it was November. They weren't originally planned that close together though. Marvel simply didn't want to hold Spider-Man back that long since they worked so hard to get the character.

Out of the two, the Justice League has much more to lose than Thor 3 does. Sure Thor 3 has to make a massive profit to raise Thor's profile more, and if Thor 2 had been better and wasn't up against Catching Fire it would've made a lot more. But the entire DCEU is at risk if the Justice League doesn't crack at least a billion. If Thor 3 ends up underperforming a bit due to competition the MCU will be fine. Justice League should move to August where there's little to no competition. I feel they might consider changing dates. It can't afford to fail.

reply

Compare SS with other MCU movies.

reply

Marvel has packed Thor 3 so I don't think they are worried. They have made plenty of money an this movie will have impact on IW. JL needs to be a success or the DCEU may blow up.

Thor was released in November last time so that makes sense.

Not sure if releasing JL in November is good but it may be near the holiday weekend.

It will be bad if Thor does better though.

I think this movie will be better than Justice League because Taika Waititi it's an amazing director, also the cast it's amazing. Take a look and you will see what kind of actors Marvel did cast for this movie. In JL, I'm excited only for Batffleck and JK Simmons, the rest... meh.

Taika Waititi > Zack Snyder

What you're saying now, is the same thing I said about Doctor Strange. Since Suicide Squad, The Box Office has been wiiiide open... I wonder if Marvel is thinking that maybe, they missed a golden opportunity...
