Female Thor in the MCU

I wanted to know if anyone knew if this was going to be a possibility? I personally didn't care for the change in the comics (no need to go into why) and I don't particularly think it would do a movie any real favors. But I have heard rumors that the Thor character may die in this next film. Thanks for any info.

PS Not trying to antagonize anyone or start any debates in anyway. I'm just hoping to get my curiosity satisfied and it seems like this would be the place to ask.

Well, it's Ragnarök, so there is definitely a chance for all Asgardians to die. So who knows.

But Thor in the comics didn't die, he just lost his worthiness. They could always go that route.

The only reason I see it happening is to explain Chris Hemsworth's absence once his contract is complete. I'd be surprised if it happens.

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.

Thank you everyone for your input. It sounds like judging from this small sample that the probability of this happening is pretty low. It seems like the main fan base (I am assuming that most people commenting here on a film so early in it's production are real keen on this franchise) doesn't have much interest in this occurring. I believe that the comics they print and sell are now second fiddle to their movie productions (I know there is some cooperation and Marvel doesn't get all the proceeds but they still make insane money off of these films). Doing this for a comic run is a lot different than attempting this in an insanely expensive movie (I think Superhero movies are all very expensive as far as movies go). I may be completely and totally wrong here but it would probably just not work in a film. There are other ways to get quality strong female characters introduced into the MCU and I think they are doing that already. Thanks again everyone.

HELL no.

I trust Feige will ignore the last five years in the books. EVERYTHING has been awful and Marvel Publishing is driving away longtime fans by the hundreds. Why would they want to repeat this with the MCU???

I only have vague knowledge about the events with 'Female Thor' so not sure about what's all happening. I will say, though, that while I'm not fully against a female with her own character and has similar power to Thor, I don't like the title of 'Thor' being attached to said female.

The best way I can explain it is that Thor has been associated with the name of an Asgardian prince and warrior, and implies an individual and not a title that is given/earned, like Black Panther. It's not an alias, it's not a title, it's the god's name. It might also be the political circumstances of the why change occurred that makes me dislike the idea, though in fairness I have not had the chance to actually read the entire story lines so I could end up changing my mind once I do. However, I still don't like the idea of 'Thor' used as some sort of title reserved for special beings.

Natalie Portman doesn't want to play the part anymore, and I don't think she would be convincing as female Thor anyway.

That's a good point. As Thor is a god and is more or less immortal it's not like there is a title of Thor that gets passed down to the heir or those that win the right to be deemed worthy.

That is something a lot of Thor fans brought up when Jane was given Thor's name. Marvel promptly told them to shut up and used straw man arguments to deflect any criticism.

That sounds highly annoying and very dismissive, maybe disrespectful depending on how the whole exchange went.
I know I can't really say much since I'm not a big comic reader, but dang it all! If they wanted to introduce a goddess of thunder, give her a name that's unique to her and don't insult fans' complaints.

It probably wont happen. But IF it did, IF, then they could just change things up a little and re-cast and move on. If they can make Valkyrie and Mary Jane Watson black then they can do anything.

So, why not re-cast Natalie Portman with someone else (like they re-cast War Machine with Don Cheadle) and then have that version turn into the female Thor.

I'm not saying they should! I'm just saying they could. Some of us would complain, and then we'd go see the movie anyway. Couldn't hurt. The Thor movies have been stale in comparison to the other ones anyway.

You're talking about Thordis she was an alternate "Thor" when in the comic Jane Porter found the hammer instead, but that was only a "what if" told by the Watcher Oatu.
