No More Jane??

Huh! Portman is out. Don't know who's decision this is - hers or the studio but if it's the studio - it's a silly move. These films thrive on continuity and familiarity and continuing existing storylines. How the hell do you just remove the most important thing to him on earth? Can't wait to see how they spin this one. Maybe they'll play up the "I love her too much to have her around me, it's too dangerous" angle. That's the easy way out.

reply

Or they can recast someone who doesn't phone it in.

reply

Well, first off, this is old news, so I don't know why you're expecting some kind of spin from Marvel. They will be completely silent to it, most likely. I think it was a mutual decision. Natalie Portman clearly thinks she's above working for Marvel, and Marvel probably wasn't happy with her atrocious performance in The Dark World.

The fans have shown a willingness to accept recasts. They quickly accepted the Banner and Rhodes recasts. As long as they bring in a suitable replacement, I doubt anyone will skip a beat.

This.

Good riddance I say.. She really doesn't even need her character recast..Natalie hasn't cared for role since the beginning and a big part of why she signed on for TDW is because Party Jenkins was going to direct. Then whatever happened..Im not really sure, but Jenkins was out and Portman was super butthurt about that apparently. So we got the uninspired role. I didn't see yet if she is appearing in RR.. but if she is, that's actually kind of cool of her because she's been over playing Jane for awhile now. Marvel can dispose of this character imo and explore other ideas

reply

Pretty sure it was her's. And good riddance, she always acted like she was so above this type of movie.
And it won't really affect anything in the next movie since it's not set on earth. It will be interesting to see how they play it as I've heard a rumor that he had a love interest in this. I don't know. Tony's broke up, now Thor. It's just a bad day for male superheroes. While I hated to hear about Tony and Pepper (though it really worked for CACW to push the story), I'm not really disturbed by the news about Thor and Jane. Probably because it's Portman. If he goes back to Jane, maybe they'll recast to someone who actually cares about the part.

Jane being gone is great news to me. Frankly, I'd be happy if all the superhero movies got rid of the love interests. Actually, if the love interest is herself a superhero (or, if not superpowered, at least as skilled as Black Widow) then it's not so bad because then the woman is just as likely to save the male hero as he is to save her. It's a more equal relationship. Otherwise, it's just a set up for the damsel-in-distress melodrama. Even my kids were laughing at how many times Superman had to stop to run off and save Lois Lane in BvS. By the end my 19 year old daughter was yelling at Superman to just let her die, lol.

And yes, I'm already rolling my eyes at Steve Trevor in the upcoming Wonder Woman movie. Just because I'm a woman doesn't mean I need an insipid romance to enjoy a movie about superheroes, or any movie for that matter.

That's fine if this guy likes the melodrama produced by the love interests in superhero movies. I'm of the mind that there is already enough drama going on in these movies, what with the end of the world being nigh and all, without resorting to so-and-so's civilian love interest getting upset because he/she didn't call/text/show up for their date. I'm a woman (married 20+ years, mom of four) and I do fast forward through all the romancey bits. I also don't read romance novels, rarely watch rom coms, and hate shopping. So I can do without all the Lois Lanes, Peppers, Janes, and Steves of the comic book world. I didn't care for them when I was in high school and reading DC and Marvel and I certainly don't care for them now. But that's just me.

I need a 'like' button! I'm with you, I despise the shoehorned romances, and Portman was gawdawfal as Jane.

Yes, to all of this. Great post gveronica. I am also a woman and also have absolutely zero interest in the romantic subplots, especially Thor's. I actually don't mind Pepper, which is strange because Gwyneth Paltrow usually irritates me, but that's probably because she always felt like a more relevant part of the Iron Man movies than Jane did to the Thor movies, and RDJ and Paltrow have more chemistry than Portman and Hemsworth do.

As a woman, I don't want to see female characters relegated to the love interest. Give me kickass female superheroes and female villains any day, which hopefully with Valkyrie and Hela in Ragnarok, we'll get great examples of both.

Plus, I have nothing against Portman, but I was sick of seeing her phoning in her performance by the end of TDW. I like Jane in the comics, but the MCU version of her is so flat and boring. I'd rather have no Jane than dull, lifeless Jane that is dragging the movies down with her.

^^^^Great post I thought this was just me. I'm also a woman and I don't give a sh!t about romance period. I find it completely uninteresting, and it's so melodramatic. It's by far the worst element in superhero films.

reply

As a fellow woman who thinks romance are overrated, I agree with you full stop.

If people were trying to bring you DOWN, that means you were ABOVE them.

reply

No room for Jane. No room for romances at all in these movies. That's stuff for tv shows. No need to invent a reason for her to be there in this movie, even less room for her in the Infinity War movies. So when does Jane fit in? 12 years from now? Whatever story and resolution they wanted to wrap up for Jane needed to be done by the end of Dark World.

They should make some kind of "Girls Night Out" one shot with her and Pepper and wrap up things there.

I think it's sad Jane got to be nothing but "THE GIRLFRIEND" in those films. She could have been the one to build an Einstein-Rosen Bridge between Earth and Asgard. Instead we see her go on an awkward date with some guy who could just as well never have shown up again.
She could have been there in Age of Ultron, along with the science bros.

It's not like there were nothing to do for her character.

I agree with a lot of the comments made here, but I like what you had to say.

The best way to deal with Jane Foster and Thor's love for her is kill her out of the franchise. That's the only way Thor would accept the loss of the love of his life up to this point.

Fans need closure as well as characters.

Stuff her in a fridge

I am not certain if the Thor movies will suffer due to the absence of Natalie Portman .

What's missing in movies is same as in society: a good sense of work ethic and living up to ideals.
