i actually prefer american crime over fargo and true detective

as weird as it sounds just much more consistent for me as well.

If you want to be taken seriously, you have to be a serious person.

I don't watch Fargo, but True Detective suffered a considerable dropoff in Season 2, while American Crime managed to keep itself together with a powerful storyline, but also AC still had a lot of the same actors, while TD had completely different actors. Only Colin Farrell gave an Emmy-caliber performance of the TD Season 2 cast.

Go check out Fargo! They are really different shows though.

What was inconsistent about Fargo?

To me, AC felt a lot like the 2nd season of TD: more of everything, a lot of interesting elements, but a lack of focus on what story the creators really want to tell. To the degree that main plot and side plots are not really defined, since everything matters the same.

I think it's closer to The Night Of, which is 10/10 from me so far - it's amazing. I do like American Crime, but I would say 6.5/10, because I either can't get a read on the characters (Carter, Russ who has a checkered past yet doesn't seem to deserve the hatred for his acts 20 plus years ago), or they're so damned unlikable and annoying (like ... everyone else). I'm on episode 6 of season 1.

"or they're so damned unlikable and annoying"

It's called "a fully developed three dimensional character that is realistic". If people were naturally well behaved all the time, and never did stupid things the world would be a very boring place to live in, and writers would never come up with an entertaining story.

You can be a well-developed character without resorting to extremes ... Do you hang out with open racists? Most make an effort to keep it under the radar, or may be largely unaware of it. Even the addicts I have known in my life have been in possession of qualities that made me empathize with them. You can be a troubled kid and not be a complete a-hole to your parents at every turn. The majority of characters were written in tge extreme, which makes for a compelling show, but I'd also like a character to root for before the last friggin episode.

Fargo is far too quirky to compare to AC. It would be like throwing in AHS(which I liked the first couple, then not so much after that). AC seasons are all different with the characters not being connected whatsoever to the other seasons. But Fargo seasons, according to the writers are connected(as well as to the movie). They said the upcoming one will show it. We're also seeing many of the same actors in each season of AC, which makes it interesting in a completely different way than Fargo. True Detective I have not seen as I do not get premium channels. Maybe one day.

The thing about AC that I love, I know some find boring or drives them nuts, is that the writers leave some of it up to us to use our imaginations(as my favorite Willy Wonka would say). It goes against the grain of what we are use to in tv shows, especially those with a mystery. But not everything is so easily solved. Nor does everything have an ending.
