Did anyone feel the family was necessarily hard on Russ??

Yes he ran out. Yes he made mistakes. But for the love of God it was decades (?) ago! I don't understand why this family just kept bringing up the past ad nauseum. I can understand why he shot himself Jesus Christ.

think about the effects that Russ's character had on his family. He left his ex wife completely destitute, having to live in public housing and welfare-for years on end. That completely poisoned his ex against him. As a result she becomes biased against minorities cause she was a minority in that environment. Her sons grow up seriously dysfunctional, the oldest selling and doing drugs before being forced into the army. Her bitterness multiplied the negative feelings his kids had against him, they not only had to deal with the hardships his actions caused but had to deal with all the poison she had for Russ. Not that I am blaming her for that. Russ earned that. He disappears for decades and tries lamely to get back in their lives through infrequent phone calls. Russ was a horrible person. You see him late in life trying to repair his past mistakes but since his actions destroyed the other 3 members of his family it is hard to have much sympathy for him. A complicated character, absolutely, which is one of the best parts of this show.

I totally understand her point of view (and what you pointed out). I have an almost 18 year old whose father left us when she was 4 months old. Granted our life isn't half as bad as Barb had it but I did live on welfare and in public housing for six months and it was the worst time of my life. I met my husband when my daughter was a year old and he has since adopted her and raised her as his own and supported us. If not for him who knows how long I would have been on state assistance and that was working two jobs.
It hurts me to the core to think he could come back in her life as an adult when he did nothing and wasn't there for all the hard stuff.

I'm glad someone said this. Russ does not deserve a pass and does deserve all of the negative treatment.

Not after his son was murdered.

What's wrong with trying to repair what you've broken? That makes him terrible? He's terrible because of the ending of the series but not for what he was trying to do during the majority of it.

reply

So you meant to say unnecessarily hard?

Agree 100%. His son was murdered and he was the one who had to ID him and he was shot in the face.
