According to zap it the ratings...why cancel this abc??

Forever (10-11pm – 4.1 million and 1.1/4 in AD18-49): At 10pm on its season finale, ABC’s Forever returned from the prior week’s preemption up 10% in Adults 18-49 (1.1/4 vs. 1.0/3) for its 2nd consecutive original of growth to match its best number since December – since 12/2/14. In the hour, Forever tied CBS’ season finale of Person of Interest in Adults 18-49 and beat the CBS drama with Adults 18-34 and Women 18-34. On average during its freshman season, Forever improved Tuesday’s 10pm hour for ABC by 70% in Adults 18-49 (1.7/5 vs. 1.0/3).

This show was ten times better than Person of Interest.

Mill: in your universe, Forever was better. People do this all the time, make blanket statements that cover the opinion of everyone. There was room in my universe for both shows, and I recorded them both and enjoyed them both. They both fell victim to not being owned by the network that aired them; they are both owned by Time Warner.

It is really all about the money. The network makes much less money on a show that goes into syndication if they don't own it. The network is less willing to put more money and time into a show that is doing fairly well if they don't own it.

It is simple economics. How can the network make the most money....

reply

it sort of makes sense, but then again- doesn't a show go into syndication after 100 episodes, which would've been another 3-4 seasons away..
so how much money *would* they 'lose out on' giving the show another 1-2 seasons as opposed to cancelling it, passing on a fan-favourite and probably angering viewers..

reply

Don't kid yourself... All the angry fans will be back in the fall to continue the cycle.

reply

So whatever drek ABC puts into that timeslot will be automatically watched?

Who is kidding who - ABC better fill the slot with a show I like or this angry fan will go elsewhere for his entertainment.

So, if you like the new show in the time slot you'll watch it... so will others. If it gets cancelled the empty threats to leave ABC will start again!

Thanks for agreeing!

reply

I did?

You're welcome - but since you are feeling that you owe me a thank you maybe you could explain how I deserve your thanks. While you're doing that, thank me for pointing out that ABC had three good shows and now has two. So dreck aside ABC will never fill the spot with a show as good as forever.

reply

Clearly they don't care. They will fill it with a show. Some people will like the show. It will get cancelled. People will complain and threaten to stop watching ABC. Original point stands.

But seems like a bad business model.

Actually, the number has dropped in recent years. I think it's feasible now with as few as 3-4 seasons (approx. 66-88 episodes, give or take).

reply

I liked it more than PoI. But I like 5 card draw more than Hold 'em. Doesn't make either of my opinions over ride yours.

So yeah, blanket statements of opinion, IMnsHO, are stupid.

- no, angry fans won't be back. There are SO many other options and outlets that if ABC dropped the ball once, they would be hard pressed to retrieve that particular fan base they lost. I don't foresee myself watching ABC on Tuesday nights for any reason anymore. They've lost the ability now to advertise new shows to me - except in the slim 30 minute window of Modern Family and maaaaybe an hour's worth of Scandal on Thurdsdays. Maybe. ABC is effectively making itself obnoxious to viewers by focusing so exclusively on 20 somethings and trying to appeal to that ONE demographic that it repels EVERYONE else. Good Luck, ABC. And by the way.... 20-somethings like decent uplifting television programming, too. I truly think ABC is insulting Millennials by insisting they'll only watch drek. What's wrong with you, ABC??

reply

Yeah I won't be back. I was in it for Ioan and Judd. I normally won't even bother with a new show. I'll put things I own on DVD. I order a lot of British TV. I watch very little prime time TV. Unless it's an actor I like and the show they are on is good. There is no show I'm watching regular and dvring on prime time. I have IZombie. That's cause of my daughter. Sooo I won't be back unless....they grab one of my favorite British actors. BBC,PBS,AMC and anything that has to do with History. Does matter. My spending doesn't count to the prime time net works. LOL I take my buying power some where else.

You must give "Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell" a go, I_M. Currently airing here in the UK on the BBC, so it's bound to turn up on BBC America soon. I'm a bit concerned that it will be edited though, as the episodes are a full hour long, and BBCA is inclined to chop that down a bit I think, because of ads? Maybe they'll grant it a longer slot instead. I hope so.

Anyway, if you enjoyed the book, you'll enjoy the show. And if you haven't read the book, I hope you'll be encouraged to read it! Great cast, and great fun (though episode one proved a bit too slow for many, sadly. The ratings haven't been great, which is a damned shame. Episode two was absolutely splendid).
