Forever vs. Lucifer

Anyone watched the new show on Fox - Lucifer?

Immortal (Satan is immortal, right?) joins up with a LAPD Detective to solve crimes, eh

reply

Watched it. No comparison; Lucifer can't die and doesn't care who knows.

reply

Watched the first episode....opens with both the lead and the girl he's talking with being killed, the girl dies but our hero survives (of course as he's immortal)

Ends with offering to join forces with the lady cop (who has her own backstory)

So just coincidental that Forever Episode 1 had the similar opening/closing?

reply

There are many, many shows with a similar premise. Not just Lucifer.

Angel - Immortal detective teams up with attractive lady cop to fight crime.
Forever Knight - Immortal cop teams up with attractive lady doctor to fight crime.
Dresden Files - Mortal (but supernaturally gifted) detective teams up with attractive lady cop to fight crime.
Sleepy Hollow - Mortal (but supernaturally resurrected) historical figure teams up with attractive lady FBI agent to fight crime.
iZombie - Undead doctor teams up with attractive male cop to fight crime.

Those are the ones I could come up with off the top of my head. There are probably another half dozen more, at least, with only slight variations on the theme. And in every procedural cop show, supernatural or not, you will have someone dying during the first few minutes. Meanwhile, the star has to survive (or resurrect) in order to have a show at all.

Not saying your comparison isn't valid. It's just that the trope is so common that I doubt Lucifer's first episode is a ripoff of Forever.

"Lucifer" is based on a comic strip that's been knocking about for years, so it's not a rip-off of "Forever", no. Did remind me a lot of it though! I was watching the pilot episode, thinking how much I'd rather be watching "Forever". No fair, television.

"Forever" has the far better cop sidekick, too. The detective on "Lucifer" is dull as ditchwater.

Actually. That wasn't the case.

I sort of like Lucifer and there is nothing on opposite it, so i watch it. It's an okay show.

But other than a similarity with the premise, i wouldn't compare the two shows. Forever is so much better on several levels. One is the writing, another are the characters, and lastly the actors.

While the acting is good enough in Lucifer and the characters are relatively likable, i never really feel drawn into the stories like i did with the ones on Forever.

Within the context of each show, i find the relationships of the characters in Forever much more believable. And i was really drawn into the stories. Some of that is the writing. The stories were just so much more interesting and i loved how they incorporated history into each episode. A lot of it though was the acting. You really rooted for the characters, especially for Henry. I loved his unique relationship with his son over the years and in present day, how he missed and longed for Abigail, and his need (yet hesitation) to recapture that in present day with Jo. I also loved his evolving "friendship" with Lucas.

It was just an all-round well written and acted show, and i still cannot believe they cancelled it when the ratings weren't that bad.

Fraaaank. FRANK! Get my jean bin. Susie wants my jeans.
No she doesnt.

I like Lucifer. A little. But Forever was a better story in so many levels. Much more interesting.

And I love the characters. I don't feel the same with Lucifer characters. And Jo is so much better cop than Chloe. No competition!

reply

They have similarities but they are still different shows. I loved Forever, now I love Lucifer. I am rematching Forever. I would probably pick Lucifer.

reply

Both shows have similarities, but I like Forever better.

reply

I enjoy both shows. They really though have to mix it up as far as this whole consultant-law enforcement thing. It's getting a tad repetitive.

reply

And both stars are Welsh, from Cardiff...
