This really surprised me. I thought they a good couple. Devar can be smarmy at times, but it seemed to me he truly loved Melanie. I hope what we saw isn't true.

shareAgreed. I am surprised too. But perhaps that is just false advertising, perhaps Melanie was just saying something like that to her sister, but the whole conversation was edited. Perhaps she was sarcastically mocking her sister and saying "oh yeah, well yep Devar just got his green card and rand off with a big chunk of money!" or something like that, but the producers edited it for the commercials to actually make it sound like he ran off. Who knows. However, if he actually ran off that would be shocking! They seemed like a normal decent couple!
shareThat is what I suspect as well. She was just repeating what people would say. IIRC he showed up with Mel in previews of the reunion. They were all lovey dovey.

When they were chatting on the couch about money he had this small smile beginning in his facial muscles that he did pretty well to hide. I think that he plans to do whatever he wants to do.

I get it. A family member goes to America to find riches...you know that family is banking on Devar helping out and sending funds home. They think that they are sacrificing as well. Losing him to another country, the years that he's here (no green card to work with) without being able to contribute to the family cookie jar, the putting up with the "new" family member that is of a different race and customs (mind you ppl don't always do their research and can seem toxic to foreigners when in their country...that Ugly American mentality) and sometimes when he's the only son, such as in Devar's case, there is not a male in the household to protect the mother, sisters and protect their family. We are not talking about America. Jamaica is much different...and tourists usually only scratch the surface of what goes on there when they stay in their fancy resorts and sip piña coladas at the beach. It feels like they (the family left behind) are giving something up, so of course they have a reasonable expectation of gaining something in return. If nothing else whatever he is earning doing this show is his. He has set up a "reasonable expectation" of gaining in the relationship since she has paid for everything thus far. If divorced, he will make out well.

While they were at his sisters house (which was large, and seemed above standard at least on the outside. It seems like it was an upstairs unit though as they seemed to be coming up steps when they entered the interior door) during the conversation with the sisters, one of them asked if he was contributing to the household (seemed like fishing for info to me) then they cut to a side interview with just the sisters where they said something to the fact that it wasn't right that she was supporting him, and they both broke out laughing! To me it looked like they found it funny that Melanie was doing so. I think he has been sending money home the entire time, which may or may not be known to Melanie, and he does seem to be lying to her about doing so and trying to appease her by saying he won't do it on the regular basis. The sisters get a kick out of it..they are living off her income as well.
