Donovan and Fox were great together
This film's low budget atmosphere and setting was held tightly together by Jeffrey Donovan and Matthew Fox's acting. They did a superb job with the material they had to work with.
Both of them had turned into these unlikable guys surviving. At first I thought I really didn't like Donovan's strict, weakling character, especially coming off how bada$$ he was in the beginning, but as the movie moved on and they revealed what happened to Emma, it was understandable why he had become that way.
Both characters were miserable in some way and both had some redeeming qualities. Various people on these boards seemed to attack the writing in saying the characters were idiots, but it was understandable why they were the way they were. Donovan's character was about protecting Lou, and I don't see how that could have been accomplished while venturing out in the wild. Fox's character was about watching over Lou from afar while still being miserably depressed... it was obvious he wasn't going adventuring too far either.
This was more like a zombie movie attached to a character study rather than a typical flick, and the acting from both the leads really helped sell the premise.
