They had ample time,a year or more, but: basement unsecured, cellar unsecured. When crisis came Jeffrey Donovan character sent girl into unchecked basement. They had nice kill zone with wire fences and an electrical light but they locked themselves into house. Nobody on guard ,nobody kept an eye after generator. They could use against zombies : electrical fence, fire, mechanical traps, tripwires, masked pits , rotating mechanical blades ( something like from the Ravenholm in Half Life ). Well they thought that zombies have extinct, but once learned the opposite, they had about a week (?) or two to prepare at least something.

well the reason was that these idiots thought they were safe since zombies were not seen for 9 years but kept the fences just in case.

They had 9 years to prep and had only about 80 rounds of ammunition...

Everyone is pretty much gone and you have 9 years. My Arsenal would have been stupid and the amount of loaded magazines would make your head spin. Ohhhh. And perhaps a melee weapon other than a wooden bat and a shard of glass at one point. Hell Matt Fox was somehow able to procure. Fully automatic AK or SKS there at the end; but only two mags?

And fences without other defenses? Who cares about the infected. How about guard against other humans. Blah.

9 years and only a 1970's pickup truck? Year two you'd think someone would cruise by the nearest national guard armory and grab a Hummer or something.

Pfft. Your smartphones die with no jack nearby and you crap your pants. Face it. All you goobers would have been zombie snacks in the first week of the epidemic.
