Maudlin & contrived (spoilers)

"Something's very wrong with this bus full of people - let me investigate alone."

The father is so fearful that he doesn't allow daughter downstairs without permission or to linger by the window, yet there are no fortifications whatsoever besides a gate and a not-so-tall fence. He could have had an armored fort if he wanted.

Daughter is a constantly self-imperiling kid; such a tired horror cliche.

They have the whole world to claim a spot in, but these enemies (obviously something to do with the mother, and I'm sure it's a stupid reason) of a decade live right next door to each other with a weak chain length fence between, not even a visual barrier. (Because the other guy wants to protect the kid too? Dumb. Can't the father make him leave?) The father even puts up with him blasting music, disrupting his daughter's rest? Inexplicable.

The zombies miraculously adapted to the cold, becoming blind for no particular reason. Naked mole rats are blind mammals, they not only have excellent hearing but smell and detection of vibration. Not these uselessly blind zombies.

His ex-friend who he allowed to be bitten by a zombie - wouldn't he assume that he was going to be a zombie too? Then why not shoot him rather than allow a risk that could easily endanger his daughter?

Think some kind of motorized vehicle might come in handy in a wintry apocalypse in which you have to find provisions? The dad doesn't think so.

A makeover can cure a man of alcoholism and madness.

Feeble makeshift cross is still in parking lot after 9 years of snow, wind, rain etc.

The sunrise! Full of symbolism of hope etc. So inspiring they did it twice.

Life lessons: being cooped up in your house isn't really living.

"OK sound effects guys, I want lots of hissing, squealing, and growling from the crawlers, I mean zombies."

Movies are typically full of illogic and cliches; that's normal. But if the viewer notices them, something is wrong. Usually it's because the movie is insufficiently convincing or compelling. Ultimately, the characters and their relationships don't work: the father-daughter stuff and the grievance between the former friends doesn't ring true and isn't interesting. It's trying to be heartfelt and full of emotional resonance but maudlin and contrived. It wants to be more than 'just another zombie movie' but it isn't; it's not good enough. Maggie succeeded (to some extent) where Extinction failed.
