Mannix should have killed Warren.

That bugged me the whole 2nd half of the film. Mannix admired this guy so much he practically loved him. And he's gonna look the other way after Warren murdered him. It's not even mentioned after the intermission. One of this movie's many problems.

You need to watch the movie again. Nuance can be your friend. There are several good reasons like survival which explains why Mannix came to side with Warren

reply

Nuances are stupid. But more to the point, him wanting to avenge the general should have come up.

And working with Sam Jackson didn't get him much, he died anyway.

"Nuances are stupid". Is that anything like " Facts are stupid "?

Someone attempted to poison Mannix. He realized that Warren seemed to have a better grasp on the remaining individuals. Warren's questioning of those left bore that out. Plus the fact that Warren trusted Mannix more than the others. Time for a pact for mutual survival.

See you didn't even have to watch it again. Actually it isn't all that nuanced.

Why didn't he kill him at all he end. I would have. More to the point before the intermission Manix didn't want Warren even talking to the general. And then after the intermission, after Warren murdered him and bragged about murdeing and raping his son, Manix doesn't even mention him. No residual anger or anything and this was before the coffee was poisoned. Doesn't make sense. Granted Tarantino movies are always pretty loose with reality. But this film, the more you see it, the less it makes sense.

It's not as if Warren ever dropped his guard after smoking Smithers

reply

Warren technically did not murder Smithers. He killed him in self defense after Smithers pulled his gun on him after the black dingus story (which, given warrens lack of credibility, probably didn't happen). Mannix may have idolized Smithers, but probably understood that warren was justified in killing him and he picked the lesser of the two evils to side with in that conflict.

If you buy into the fact that mannix was a law man then he might not have liked warren but respected the self defense killing. I feel like this is backed up by the fact he hates Joe gage and even after he is shot does not shoot a unarmed man. He kept his pact with warren to see justice brought to all of the gang.

It was said during the narration that it was discussed whether or not Warren's killing of the General was a self-defense killing or a murder.

Mannix, despite his family's history, claimed to be sheriff of Red Rock, and thus must uphold the law. The fact that Warren had goaded Smithers into going for the gun would not nullify the argument that Smithers had gone for it and tried to kill Warren.
