Warren's story was true
Confirmed by Smithers explaining why his son went to Wyoming prior to Warren and Bob returning from the barn.
shareIt could have been that warren did kill Smithers son, but the "black dingus" part was most likely fabricated. This is typical Tarantino though, where only the character knows whether or not something truely happened. But to me, that "starting to see pictures" statement tells me that it was made up. The story was obviously meant to hurt and piss off the general into grabbing the gun warren placed next to him. Warren would then have a lawful excuse for killing Smithers, which was self defense.
