Lying Down in the Car

So i thought the reason Claire always rode in the car that way was because of her back pain. But at the end of the movie it occurred to me that it was because she didnt wanted to be reminded of the accident that had killed her son. was i slow to pick up on that, or did it take others a while to get it? and then at the end of the filem she finally came to terms with it.

Took me a while too! Perhaps it is also why her physical recovery is taking so long - because emotionally she can't let go of the pain...

I agree you hit the nail on the head, and I thought the same as you through the film until the end when she sat up. Then I got it, just like you.

It's both for sure. Minds are powerful things. Emotional pain and physical pain can become conflated. I'm sure she had convinced herself that the reason for lying down was the physical pain because that makes more sense and is excusable - the emotional pain is much more difficult to bear and much more difficult to talk about. If you can just tell someone that it hurts you to sit up in a car, that's easy. And you can convince yourself that it hurts you physically to sit up in a car.

Just before the border crossing there's a brief discussion that she can sit up without pain. She also sits in many chairs, on the couch, etc. It's 100% not for pain. See other posts for the reasons.
