What was the story? Angry about the time wasted!

I didn't get the story at all...

What was the nature of her relationship with Nina? Seems like it was more than just someone from the support group. At first I though she was the estranged mother and then it became clearer and clearer that they didn't really know each other at all. And her issue was that her kid died.

How did her kid die?

Who was the man who came to her house and she attacked?

What accident did she have? Did she really have a parachuting accident? Sounded like she was being sarcastic.

Why does Silvana (or whatever her name was) stick around? For what? Who neglects their own daughter and husband to help a lady who treats her like *beep*

What's the deal with the support group? She obviously hated it. Why did she care that they didn't want her to participate anymore?

Was she trying to get with Nina's husband? That relationship was so bizarre and weird. I didn't get it at all.

I really didn't like this film, it felt like an enormous waste of time. I'd like it if someone could answer my questions because I really like Jennifer Aniston and I don't want to think of it as a waste of time.

Thanks!

I'll to answer your questions as best as I can.

The support group is for people with chronic pain. It is not said, that I can recall, what the source of Nina's chronic pain was. It seemed to me that Claire just bonded with Nina because their kids were of similar ages. Nina was also honest, not giving contrived answers to the counselor's prompts; this has to do with the title of the movie as well. When the counselor asked what the participants dream was, Nina gave an honest answer, while Claire said that her dream was to have sex with all of players of Read Madrid FC.

It is implied that Claire got hurt in an accident (probably reckless driving). Her son did not survive. There was a lawsuit and a trial. The man who came to her house is the one responsible for the accident, and he came see her to apologize. He didn't get a chance to to talk to her at the time of the trial.

It is my belief that Silvana stays with Claire because she genuinely cares for her, and her former husband and child. This is also made clear in Silvana's tirade at the Drive-In. Silvana even refuses to give away the child's toys, taking them home with her. There is also the fact that she needs a job, as her husband does not have one at the moment. I don't think Silvana is neglecting her family. Her daughter is older is looks like she can take of her needs and education.

I do think that Claire had a minor crush of Nina's husband, but it was mostly a cry for attention and comfort. Claire needs attention and love, but drives people away with her bitter and sardonic personality. I don't know if some of that in intrinsic, or the result of being under such strong medications for a long time

The scene at the railroad tracks and the very last scene when she straightens the car seat are symbolic that she is on the mend, physically and emotionally. I think those are really the two scenes that surmise the story.

I would highly recommend that you watch this movie again with my reply, and hopefully others' in mind. I really enjoyed Jeniffer Aniston's and Adriana Barraza's performances.

So My summary is that Claire was in a car accident that killed her son. The man who came to her home was the man responsible. He felt the need to appologize and couldnt at the trial. She is in chronic pain from the injuries sustained in the crash. She likely has a rod in her femur (my brother does too and broken back and a useless arm now that has had dozens of surgeries). She was told to attend group therapy to help with her healing to hopefully keep her off the paon medication. When she goes to the pain clinic the dr asks her about it and she lies that it was good even though they kicked her out.

She decides to dig into Nina's suicide. Perhaps to figure out how she might do it herself or what Nina might have felt etc. but as she does she seems to try a few times and can't go trough with it.

I think she bonds with Nina's widowed husband and he with her not so much in a sexual way but in that they need each other. They each seem to have the puzzle pieces each other is missing. Him and his son and she a mother figure. They know what the other is needing without a lot of words needing to be said.

Silvana cares about her as a person not just an employee. But she snaps at the movie. She is exhausted and just wants Claire to get on with life or be done. And stop the madness. She is TRYING to be there for her but it is hard to do with someone like Claire. She was mostly venting and frustrated. Silvana's daughter is an adult and not negelected. She just did not understand Silvanas relationship to Claire. She felt needed and was a rock for Claire to lean on. She is all she had.

It was so overwrought with innuendo that the story doesn't even matter to me anymore. There's time I'll never get back l! I think it sucked.

Innuendo? Fairly sure you were looking the other way when the film was on!!! I think you missed the point.

Innuendo? I'm not sure what you mean by that.

As for angry about not getting the time back, well that's the risk when you watch any film. Or do anything at all, for that matter.

Sorry that you didn't enjoy it.

I tried to watch and I truly wanted it to be good because of everything I read. JA was great but I only made it to the hour point maybe. It was so nebulous and convoluted I just didn't care. Sorry! It could have been so good

Did you even watch the movie or are you just hopelessly retarded?

I was thinking something similar.

SPOILERS!

How did her kid die? In the accident that left her with chronic pain.

Who was the man who came to her house and she attacked? The man who caused the accident.

What accident did she have? Did she really have a parachuting accident? Sounded like she was being sarcastic.
She was in a car accident. She was being sarcastic about the parachuting bit.

Why does Silvana (or whatever her name was) stick around? For what? Who neglects their own daughter and husband to help a lady who treats her like *beep* People who need jobs all the time stick around people who treat them like crap. Happens every day.

What's the deal with the support group? She obviously hated it. Why did she care that they didn't want her to participate anymore? Not seeing why you think she "hated" it. She might have been annoyed by it but still found it helpful or just a means to kill time or deal with boredom. But all that said, I don't think she gave much of a damn about being kicked out of the group aside from the ego-blow that'd come for most people when getting kicked out of anything.

Was she trying to get with Nina's husband? I don't think she was trying to "get with him" in some sexual way, if that's what you mean.

Almost entirely THIS. Good, well organized answer. +1 for bold!

I found the story slowly revealed (like things are in reality. I never get exposition when I meet someone) but all there. Someone above said she has pins, but the water therapist said she did previously have pins. So a very bad accident, multiple surgeries to bolt her together, then remove the bolts, etc. Seen it, not a good time.

Agree the therapy probably worked for her, but she dealt with things in a way that upset other group members. She may well have needed to leave the group but it is somewhere from dickish to actionable the group leader called and said to leave, and didn't talk face to face, much less actually find her another.

Also agree I only sorta liked the movie as a whole, but most individual moments were great. Pretty much everyone acted well, it's filmed well, etc. and I don't mind the structure, or even the (very small part of her overall) journey that was accomplished during the film, but something didin't totally stick.

P.S. I have to do lots of family therapy, etc. as part of the family, I go but do not like a lot of the games, annoy people with my own morality (e.g. forgiveness is divine, so if you say you forgive you are lying. I would have said so and gotten kicked out of the group in that opening scene.)

I wasn't real thrilled with the film either, though I basically liked it. I was in an auto accident and had chronic pain for a year, and still do somewhat 10 years later, so I related to Claire's character. I stayed with it because it's a good looking film, and that often makes up for a lot. It also reminded me of 'Maps To The Stars' a bit, one I liked a lot. Plus I like Jennifer Aniston. I do wish they had filled in more of the back story, but it does give you something to think about. You really can guess a lot.

I'm curious about the premise, but i am worried I'll be fidgety for the execution of the storytelling. I'm more intrigued ti see "I Smile Back".
