Why couldn't Nick eat chips?

I didn't hear the reasoning behind that.

reply

usually in most(?) vampire movies/shows vampires can't eat regular people food. in most films/shows it makes the vampire VERY sick (like we saw with Nick). in UNDERWORLD EVOLUTION they had a similar scene where Michael tried eating steak and got violently ill from the attempt.

reply

aah! Right. Gotcha. I forgot about that... they just stick with blood, huh? Sounds exhausting.

reply

If they could eat regular food, that would eliminate the need of blood, don't you think?

They were just regular people with pointy teeth who can't die.

reply

Wouldn't make for a very exciting vampire movie if they just sat around and ate egg and chips. Can you imagine Dracula saying to his mates, just going to Burger King anybody want anything. Come to think of it I'd rather eat blood than Burger King any day.

Not if they depend on it, there are dozens of minerals we need to consume and if you remove one you would get spectacular results like scurvy or growing a 3rd arm.

I guess the chip had salt, one of the antivamp weapon besides garlic, cross etc

reply

Funny you should mention garlic...I thought they were garlic chips. :)

reply

Salt is for ghosts and demons, not vampires. The only way salt relates to vampires is it's a good idea to carry a bag around with you, because Vampires are apparently obsessive counters. Spill the bag of salt and they'll stop chasing you in order to count the grains of salt.

I guess vampires used to shop for underwear at K-Mart too.

reply

they cant eat solids, as nick mentions

Most vampire fiction they cannot digest human food. Watch Let the Right one In for a similar scene. Their bodies can't process it so they end up having to expel it by vomiting. This also comes up in Fred Saberhagen's The Dracula Sequence book series and Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles.

The Original Dracula novel also says "I do not sup" before "I never drink... wine."

"Most vampire fiction they cannot digest human food."

I think that it's pretty clear that they can in fact digest food (and blood) of humans.

Why humans and not, for instance, cows? Must be a magical thing, like not being able to enter a place uninvited.

reply

In many mythologies vampires can feed on animals.

I wouldn't say it's magical, I would say physiological like a vampire bat or leach or mosquito. Blood is what their body is designed to digest and process. If they burn all the components of blood and do not produce waste as humans do than the only way to expel the undigested content would be vomiting.

This comes up in Forever Knight, Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles, Fred Saberhagen's Dracula books, and Let the Right One In.

reply

They can drink the blood, but they cannot process solid food.

Petyr was given a chicken by Viago.

Wasn't that for its blood?

reply

i think since they are dead their bodies dont work like when a person is alive and their organs cannot process any food

reply

In many vampire fictions their bodies can burn all the components of the blood but as they do no produce waste and non-blood is waste there's only one way to expel it... vomiting.

reply

that's interesting. thank you so much for posting that.

reply

You're welcome. It also comes up in Let the Right one In (novel), Fred Saberhagen's Dracula book series and hinted at in Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles.

Vampires can't eat food anymore. Their systems can't process anything except blood. So when he tries to eat normal food, his system rejects it. Kind of like what happens to humans when we consume too much dairy and your stomach rejects it.

Vampires consume a liquid diet. Stay away from the sun and pointed sticks and live forever, that is supposed to be the deal.
