The Divergent series is in for a crappy ending if Shailene Woodley and other leads refuse to come back. I think splitting the last book into two halves was a bad idea and now Lionsgate is going to deprive us of a perfect theatrical conclusion and give us a low budgeted made for TV nonsense.
That's the worst possible way imaginable to wrap up a great franchise.

According to Box Office Mojo it made a little less than 180 million worldwide on a 117 million budget. Typically the studio spends about as much as the production budget on marketing but based on the general lack of marketing I saw for it will go for a little less. So going off other movies for comps it would need about double the production budget to make profit. Assuming they spent 50 million on marketing (to be generous to Lionsgate) that would put them at around 170 million plus other expenses, such as reshoots or things not covered in the production budget, the studio would have spent a total of about 200 million on this. All in all the studio probably lost 10-15 million on this project. Unfavorable reviews and waning popularity in the franchise has hurt this considerably wo while it may not have been a full blown flop it was still unsuccessful and hurtful to the Lionsgate company's investors meaning they will not be likely to invest in a fourth film even at a lower budget. The TV movie is also an awful idea as it will only be for the niche audience who loved all three other movies and want to see a continuation of the story even if by new actors with an extremely low budget.

Didn't they make enough off the first two films? Cut the budget to between 50-75 million. Cut the script time to 1 hour 35 minutes. Strengthen that script as best you can to draw back the audience.
Is that too much to ask for? Just give us a proper conclusion.

Film production politics don't work that way. And part of that political arena is the accounting math of predictive analytics that goes on.
The Parent Company only looks at the domestic box office numbers of only the previous film in a franchise to see if the BoD will green-light a sequel and / or continuation of said franchise. No domestic profit, no sequel or continuation.
Lets say this did very poorly in the US, but did very well in China. One possibility is that China could buy the rights to any sequel or continuation of a franchise. If sold, it will be mostly be filled with Chinese players and maybe the top billed American actor and filmed in China. But this is quite complicated, and now the legal department steps in to either protect or sell the rights.
One of the many reasons that worldwide box office numbers don't count domestically is because of the international marketing deals the Parent has with it's oversea's international subsidiaries in showing the picture in whatever region or market they have the rights to show it in. And the Film Production boundary now crosses paths with the Federal Government... And more politics. Even filming a US production overseas has it's legal headaches but that's another topic for another time.
Strengthen the script as best you can? Oh they do. They do. Scripts are always malleable, they change everyday on set from shooting scripts to dialogue pages. They add and take away various elements due to the Parent overseeing the Production shooting schedule. Even then at-the-end-of-the-day, those script changes can't save a film.
So the Parent in this case has decided that the best option for this franchise is to option it off as a TV movie and a spin-off TV series.
Whether or not the original cast will return is up to their respective agents. All I know is that there is a million out-of-work actors out there looking for roles. The big gamble the Parent is playing is, "Will the general public see up-and-coming and / or unknown actors to play these characters?"

Not really. The first movie made money. The second one barely covered its budget in NA. It made a bit more in the far east, but we're not even getting into marketing and such.

Yep. They got greedy. I didn't go see the last movie because I was sick of having to wait a long time to see the second half of the movie, so was waiting so I could watch both back to back.
Oh well - I guess they miscalculated badly.
It's disgraceful. I always thought they'd give it a grand conclusion like in Hunger Games.
Oh well...atleast we've got the final part in Maze Runner trilogy to look forward to. Hope they dont make the same mistake like Lionsgate did. The last time I heard, they pushed back the release date to 2018 so it's going to take a while longer to get back into production. It might be a good thing, its gives them more time to work on it.

shareIMO, the signal the studio is sending is that they don't have faith in their product. I've read where several of the actors have indicated they didn't see this coming and seem to suggest they wont' return for a television production. Changing actors, changing from theatrical release to a tv production, and other such stuff can't be signaling this will be a good product to anyone. I hope the studio pays attention to the feedback regarding this idea and rethinks a theatrical release, giving it the attention it deserves.
