Is race a thing?

So... is race a thing in the world of Bojack Horseman? Do people concern themselves with black people, white people, Asian people, etc, when there are also a million varieties of anthropomorphic animals walking around?

What's the history like? If black people were still slaves, were animal races slaves too? For example, does Bojack resent that his ancestors were owned by people that rode on horseback in colonial times?

You're thinking too hard.

The people who make this show have put a ton of thought into things like this. If we enjoy thinking about it too, why the hell shouldn't we?

Yes. In 'Our A-Story is a 'D' Story,' Todd is courted by two gangs in prison. One is a white supremacist gang.

I'm not sure. I think the "Fish Out of Water" episode addressed some of the rules of this particular universe. It wasn't my favorite episode, but they could probably do another episode to explore other background issues. I say probably because they would need a reason like they did with the underwater episode.

In "Hank After Dark," a derogatory reference is made on the news to Diane being Vietnamese and the Vietnam War.

Late response but yeah, in the Christmas special Todd says that when Sabrina had a black friend in an episode of Horsin' Around, it raised questions about racism. I'm not sure how it works in their world with the half human/half animal thing but it's definitely an issue.
