So the lesson is don't be friendly.

And don't be friends with someone who is friendly.

reply

I think the lesson is don't be a bully and don't follow the crowd. If they had accepted Marina maybe none of it would've happened..

reply

Did you see the movie? Laura wasn't a bully, in fact she was the only friendly one.

http://TheMovieGoer.com

reply

Yes I did see the movie. Just because Marina had mental health problems and didn't look like 'the popular girls' and is lonely she's branded weird by Laura and her friends. Then Laura cuts her off. Yeah real nice. I would never treat a person like that who obviously needed a friend and needed help just cause I had 'cooler' people to hang out with, but maybe that's just me.

reply

You're still confused; Laura was the only one friendly to Marina. It didn't work out, but so what? Laura tried to be friendly, get it?

http://TheMovieGoer.com

reply

Nope I'm not confused. Laura was a selfish person get it. Anyways they all got what they deserved in the end.. karma.

reply

You seem confused or stupid, because Laura was the only one friendly to Marina.

http://TheMovieGoer.com

reply

Yes she was friendly with Marina AT FIRST but then just dumped her.. (For her friends) If you think that's 'nice' behaviour you need to look up the word kindness because Laura was selfish af. And no I'm not stupid and I'm not going to continue a conversation with someone who doesn't know me and yet continues to insult me.

reply

she was friendly with Marina AT FIRST

Right, she was better than anyone else, and at least she tried. Nobody is perfect, and yes anything who thinks people should be perfect are quite stupid.

http://TheMovieGoer.com

reply

There's a difference between being perfect and being kind.. All she had to be was kind to Marina and let her join her damn crappy 'sorority' (puke puke) don't know why she wanted to be friends with that lot anyway.. you see this crap happening in schools everyday and no one can justify segregating certain people as right. It's disgusting behaviour. We are all human and should treat each other as equal. but yeah that doesn't happen too often in this world which is why you probably 'think' Laura and her pals were in the right. sad world.
also you can call me stupid all you want I really don't care as I'm a psychology graduate and going on to study post graduate. I know I'm not stupid and I don't care what you think of me as you don't know me. bye.

reply

Marina isn't Laura's responsibility, you're acting like a child. Laura tried to be nice, it didn't work out, that's life. To place blame on something like means Marina has serious psychological problems, and to agree with her means you do as well. Get help.

http://TheMovieGoer.com

reply

Maybe it just means I have a kind heart and would help anyone. those unlike me need the help I think..

reply

Kind people recognize and identify with Laura's kindness.

Crazy people identify with crazy Marina. Get help.

http://TheMovieGoer.com

reply

What do you mean "dumped her" and "nice behaviour"? Marina and Luara were just becoming friends, they hadn't known each other for more than a week or two. Do you really expect Laura to invite someone she barely knows to her birthday party, a party for her and her closest friends?

reply

Yes she was friendly with Marina AT FIRST but then just dumped her.. (For her friends)

That's not what I saw happen. Laura was having a birthday party after only knowing Marina for a week or two. Marina was being clingy and stalkerish, and Laura (and her friends) decided that it wouldn't be appropriate for Marina to be at the party, so she lied to her and told her she was just having dinner with Tyler.

After Marina stalked Laura some more and went psycho on her in the cafeteria, Laura unfriended her. This seems like a reasonable progression of this relationship. They weren't dissing Marina because she was weird or "not cool", they were distancing themselves from her because she appeared to be a psycho/dangerous.

I think Laura was as kind as she could have been, considering the circumstances. This wasn't supposed to be Mean Girls or Clueless. Laura's friends acted like friends act, but Laura herself was more than generous and look where that got her.

But Marina's behaviour was unacceptable - so I don't understand why people rag on Laura and her friends. Trichotillamania is an impulse control behaviour - it is not a mental health problem that would impede on someone's ability to understand whether what they're doing is wrong or not. Marina was harassing Laura - point blank. She way overstepped her boundaries with the messages she was sending to Laura, Laura had a damn good reason to keep Marina away. While I can sympathize with Marina's isolation and troubled past, most people would and should be unsettled by the content on Marina's Facebook page and her obsession with Laura.

So no, it's absurd to suggest that Marina should be allowed to make Laura feel as uncomfortable and unsafe as she did, while suggesting Laura is the monster for not wanting anything to do with her. Marina needed help that Laura was not qualified to provide.

reply

I think she had every right to push ma rina away. The chick was WAY too clingy! I mean seriously how much can one person take? She (Laura) should've maybe told the college psychiatrist when she saw how ma rina wasn't "stable".

But come on!

You may have seen the movie, but it doesn't sound like you actually paid attention. Your interpretations of scenes and relationships are way off everyone else posting here. I don't know you, but it sounds like a lot of projection on your part.

You have got to be trolling or you're too much like Marina to get it. Laura friended a girl who proceeded to stalk her and obsess over her. It quickly became clear to Laura that Marina had mental health problems. Marina was not Laura's responsibility.

This movie was interesting but went down the wrong path by suggesting Laura did anything wrong. Plus, the ghost/demon angle was not the route to go, IMO. This should have been like "Single White Female" or "The Roommate."

reply

Did you see the movie? Laura wasn't a bully, in fact she was the only friendly one.

yep, you got it! Marina was the one crazy obsessed.

Graham Hess: There is no one looking out for us. We are all alone.

reply

Marina showed obsessive behavior and she didn't respect boundaries. I would have cut her off as well.

reply

so Marina was an orphan, had no family no friends, was abused, bullied and raped in childhood, was so loney and just needed a friend, wanted acceptance and to be a part of something, self harmed by pulling her hair out, and committed suicide out of loneliness.. and you have no sympathy for a person like that and could just 'cut her off' ?? wow I'm so glad I'm not you. those who have no empathy for others are the real 'psychopaths'.

reply

Laura got herself involved with Marina and made a connection with her then just left/dumped her, so yeah I think she was responsible for what happened after that..

reply

umm okay. Marina is that you?

reply

'Umm' No, just a person with a kind heart who would help anyone like Marina who was in need.

reply

lol okay Marina

reply

I don't find that an insult, I'd rather be like Marina than the likes of Laura and pals, as I find people like that vile and wouldn't want to be anywhere near or be friends with any of them. I can see where you would um, 'fit in'.. and trust me that is not a complement.

reply

I was also thinking what a poor excuse for a human the very privileged Laura was. Although Laura was just a big child essentially (as with the majority of people on this thread clearly), I would still expect her to be able to empathize with a much less fortunate person than herself.

Laura really only exhibited weak, selfish traits the whole film. It's very sad to see the children on here looking up to her as if she were a role model.

She was dishonest (lied about going to a birthday dinner with only her boyfriend when she simply could've told her the truth that it was going to be a small birthday with only close friends).

She was stupid (couldn't think one day ahead to figure out that her lie would obviously be exposed on facebook).

She was cruel (still continued to show little to no concern for her role in completely humiliating her in the cafeteria. Just unfriends her without even giving her a brief explanation or a single word - weak and cowardly)

She was selfish and shallow (her whole life was based on her looks, her social status, and getting drunk). Who cares that mommy dearest is shelling out a small fortune for her tuition. She couldn't care less about her own mother probably - unless it negatively impacted her.

And another thing I must clarify. Laura was never being kind in the first place. She only accepted the friend request out of her own shallow materialistic need to have more friends on facebook. One of the most important things in her life besides her looks was the number of friends on facebook she had.

Laura was a "normal person" by all accounts.

reply

^Seriously, I have no idea why people think Laura and her friends are so nice when they're not.

reply

good points.

but still, Marina was not in need of help. As the story reveals, She's a witch and also could be possessed by a demon. So we can't argue Marina's behavior with a supernatural trait on the plate.

You sound like a naive 13 year old. Check back on this post in 10, even 5 years, and see if you still feel the same. Marina was crazy and in no way was Laura responsible for that.

I've never fooled anyone. I've let people fool themselves.

reply

You're arguing this like a member of PETA over a stray dog. WHY was Marina suddenly Laura's responsibility? Because she tried to be nice to her? Marina needed FAR more help than a "friendship" with Laura. If you really believe all the stuff you've been writing here, you are going to have a very rough life. Even saints protect themselves.

lol she sent 30 messages after a few days on facebook- is that normal? and she's not a teenager they are all in college-
and laura did not have to invite someone she had known for two weeks to her birthday party

reply

laura was the nice one. if someone's being a stalker and u don't know them you aren't exactly gonna be like yeah we can be friends :) obviously you'll cut off the person. put yourself in Laura's shoes before u say laura should've done better.she was nice but who's gonna befriend a stalker.... let's get real.

reply

Marina needed MORE than a friend. she needed counselling, lots of therapy to let go of the things that happened to her, AND to learn to love herself, before trying to find love/affection from someone else. I think the lesson here is that how can a psychology student not even realise that this was a borderline unstable person to begin with. she is generally friendly, so when the red flags started showing up, she should know Marina's behaviour is not normal.

reply

I think the lesson here is that how can a psychology student not even realise that this was a borderline unstable person to begin with.

Not really a "lesson", per se.

http://TheMovieGoer.com

reply

What are you talking about? She did immediately notice it. One doesn't have to be a psych student to catch on to the fact that Marina has mental health issues. Her 30+ msgs one day after Laura friended her are proof enough of her issues.

reply

The message was don't try and make friends on facebook.

It was actually kind of strange, because there was a genuine kind of anti technology vibe in the narrative, almost like they were commenting on the falseness of it all but the evil magic was all pagan and witchy. Perhaps the scriptwriter was just confused over what they were trying to say?

reply

I didn't think Laura was a bad guy, however she handled the situation rather badly and it all ended in tears. Lying to Marina about her party wasn't very bright especially when the photos would be all over facebook. It also wasn't a very nice thing to do either although Marina was being a big clingy.

After the altercation in the cafeteria Laura chose to give Marina the hard blank instead of answering her call to clear the air.

I'd say the moral is be careful how you treat other people, actions have consequences.

reply

but marina sending 30 messages after the first time she added her- that's not strange?
marina wanting to come to her birthday party- after knowing her two weeks and not even hanging out together- that's not strange?

i am shocked people here think laura is in the wrong when she did what anyone would have.

why would Laura invite marina to spend her birthday with her?? they barely knew each other!

marina was behaving like a stalker/was showing she was dangerous- why are people thinking that laura should have at this point introduced her to her mother?!?!?!

laura is 100% in the right- /she was being nice, marina was exhibiting abusive behaviour, she backed away

she did not have to explain to marina why she unfriended her ....marina should be grateful laura did not go to the police!

reply

I'm with ya. I think Laura tried really hard to be understanding.

I really doubt most of these critical ppl would be so understanding once this kind of thing started happening to them!

RIP David Bowie 💕

reply

Slow clap! The comments in here are off the chain. Marina was psychotic. Laura was right to unfriend her.

reply

Laura should have talked to her and made her see they should take things slower. Perhaps Marina was infatuated with her. We don't see Laura cutting off the guy who has a crush on her. Actually he is the one who ends up trying to kill her.

reply

I prefer not to use crap like facebook to begin with.

Laura wasn't a bully. Initially she was friendly but after seeing how obsessed Marina was with her plus the way she flipped out on her in the canteen can you blame Laura for cutting her off? Laura didn't owe her anything and Marina's outburst was a huge red flag considering they barely knew each other. Laura chose not to string her a along by being a fake friend.

You decide who your friends are. No one can force you to be their friend.

If it bleeds, we can kill it.

reply

I think the flipping in the canteen was fully justified based on Laura lieing to her about the birthday. She should have instead told the truth that she simply didnt knew her well enough to invite her to the party as it was only for close friends, which would have either fixed erverything or shown Marina as completely insane from the get go. But then, i guess, it wouldnt be as much of a film now would it. Obviuosly, a single lie does not excuse what Marina did afterwards, but Laura is certainly not without fault.

Lmao so trying to spare someone's feelings makes you a bad person. The OP is right the message was if there is a weird person don't look at them or speak to them as they will stalk you then murder all your friends.
Obviously the movie didn't intend to send that message, it just wasn't a well thought out movie.
