Accent doesn't equal acting....

Mr. Smith has come a long way. From the charming Fresh Prince, to the serious and demanding roles such as Ali...he's really showed he has the chops to play a wide range of characters. Even back in the day, with his role in 6 Degrees of Separation, he showed great potential. BUT, anyone could have played this role. This could have been done by any leading African American actor. This movie wasn't nominated because it wasn't that interesting. The subject matter is important, but the film itself was simply too predictable. I gotta say that I LOVE Albert Brooks in this. It's a shame we don't see him more often.

I agree. I thought Will was good in this movie, but I suspect that he and his wife felt he deserved an Oscar simply because it was a serious movie and he went to the effort to learn to speak with an accent.....which, of course, is silly, since there are tons of actors out there who successfully learn to speak with accents for whatever roles they're playing!
