Has Will been darkened up for this???

Looked like he had for me, tried google but couldn't find anything. Anyone know, or thing he was.

reply

It seemed like he had a thick skin of make up but he didnt look like Dr. Umalu anyways so If they did darkened him i dont think it was necessary.

There are a lot of scenes that has pretty dark light.
Usually we see will smith in movies with a lot of outside shoots, but half of this movie takes place in apartments and offices.

@spencer

Uh, no he wasn't. Why would any black actor need to "darken up" for a role in this day and age? What kind of silly question is that? I mean, be serious. Just so you know, black folks can get suntans too if we hang around in the sun long enough. It's possible he was just out in the sun for a long while one day. As a black person, I get slightly darker myself every summer for a while after a couple of hours of sunlight on a sunny day. Also, like another poster said, the film was clearly shot in dark and gray colors---as if if was filmed primarily on rainy days, for some reason.

I wondered that too. I decided it was makeup. There were physical changes that were made, so it is not a "silly question", person who called it that. You could read about skin color in Nigeria and educate yourself - light skinned blacks are sometimes targeted there. Take a look at this photo of the real Dr. Omalu and Smith: http://www.eurweb.com/2015/12/concussion-dr-bennet-omalu-accused-of-practicing-voodoo-eur-exclusive/

Here's a quote from an interview with Smith:

But besides taking dialect training Smith also had to undergo a physical transformation to help him look more like Nigerian doctor Dr. Bennet Omalu. “I had a prosthetic that was glued to pull my ears back and that changes the shape of my face,” he explained. “And I had a small piece that changed the shape of the hairline. It was really subtle, but just little things like that.”

Which explains why I absolutely did not think it was really Smith in the early testimony scene.

reply

I do think his skin was darkened. Plus, the lowered hairline was distracting and unattractive.

So?

He is an actor.
Actors dress as their character.
If character is darker, they made him darker.

Will Smith is African American so?

reply

Or are they supposed to cast by skin tone and not the best actor for the role?

reply

Will Smith is American. He is not African. I can't believe people still use this higly offensive term.

I came to this board solely to see what went on with his face. I have only seen the trailer, but he looks nothing like himself.

I did not react to the colour of his skin, more the whole shape of his face.

reply

You must be young. The only reason the term African American ever came into prominence is because certain black people felt the term black was racist and preferred to be called African Americans.
