Smear Campaign

This movie deserves more intelligent, and mature discussion than it is receiving here... and I think some of that is racist, some of it is personal, some of it is damage control, and some of it is a valid subjective opinion... but the amount of intelligent discussion is greatly lacking, and it deserves it.

We are not designed to play football, with an injury nearly every game, no one needs to be convinced of that now, and anyone who denies it is just lying.

we're not designed to do a lot of things:

We're not designed to listen to lecture for 6 hours a day at school.

We're not designed to sit in a chair at a desk, staring at a computer for 8 hours a day at work.

We're not designed to hold a smartphone, bending our arm at more than 90 degree angle for an extended period of time.

We're not designed to digest processed foods.

We're not designed to drink cow milk.

You're right. The movie is a little cheesy, it's an obvious "save the cat" screenplay, Will Smith is not the greatest actor, but the movie successfully raises questions the nation needs to consider. I love football, but I don't think the game can exist the way it was meant to be played and somehow become safe for the players. It's selfish for us to want to be entertained knowing a percentage of the men playing the game will go bonkers very early in life.

We aren't designed to eat Oreos either. So what.

Concussions are a problem in girl's soccer too. We gonna address that?

reply

Not being designed to play football leads to serious injury and early death.
The same cannot be said of a few Oreos, so that's a really stupid and simplistic comparison.

Point being... You do hundreds of things a day that human's weren't designed to do. Yet you still make the choice to do them. Operative word. Choice.

"Not being designed to play football leads to serious injury and early death."

The same can be said of several other sports/activities/hobbies. This isn't some revelation.

reply

True I agree completely with that. We do make our choices, and football players are paid handsomely for that choice. I notice a lot of football players playing smarter, not going for unnecessary hits, if the guy is running out of bounds etc... and that's what they should be doing... playing smarter.

I have never bothered with American football and saw nothing of it until I watched youtube and other vids of famous tackles and plays after watching this film. It appears that the game has evolved over its short history to include the head as a weapon. The early game has very poor headgear that seemed nothing more than a bucket to keep spilled brain in. Most people would have avoided nutting someone full on with a poorly padded leather hat. The modern game uses a strong laminated helmet with expanded plastic lining, almost a motorcycle helmet. As a weapon the contemporary cranium protection isn't protection, its a weapon. The American national sport needs to be modified to make it safer. Not by providing ever safer helmets (because they are not safe). They should revert to minimal headgear and let human nature work its course. See how many men enjoy throwing their head into another while running at full tilt without a motorcycle helmet for cover.

I have made this same point to friends of mine, and they all looked at me like I was totally insane, but it makes perfect sense to me. Watch Rugby football some time. Head to head contact happens, but only occasionally, and never on purpose.

Came back here to see if anything had changed regarding the business of using the head as a weapon and see one post agreeing with me.
The rest of the board for this movie is well stuffed with "if you cant take the heat".
What is it with people who cannot comprehend the fact that the brain inside the skull does not like very sudden deceleration? Minimal headgear means skilful avoidance of head to head clashes. Deer seem to manage avoiding gouging each others eyes out during the rut, evolution tells them its too expensive for their lineage and the rut became a showdown ceremony.
Motorcycle grade headgear allows people to decelerate their brain inside their skull far more quickly than if they took a run at a fellows head with almost their own bare head purely because they would not aim to do that.

Yeah like choosing to drive or fly in a plane. The difference is hundreds of thousands of man hours where spent researching the risks associated with powered travel. Not to mention billions of dollar's. Otherwise we wouldn't have life saving equipment such as the safety belt or airbag.

We know American Football players both Amateur and Professional are risking permanent damage to they're bodies. We also know beyond a reasonable doubt they are risking irreparable damage to they're minds. Once the reality is accepted the work can begin to protect them. But it must start with the NFL commission.

As medical science advances the arguments will only become more concrete. The NFL is holding seven, deuce right now and bluffing all the way to the river. If they risk it all on short term profits this sport will die. The NFL is American Football and its carcass will be picked clean by an unfathomable number of lawsuits. Once the head is gone the body will die.

BTW I *beep* hate handegg. It's a *beep* sport.
