Will Smith was phenomenal.

Oscar bait or not...

He was brilliant!

Agree that he was much better than I expected from the trailers. Same issue I had with Joseph Gordon Levitt in "The Walk." Seeing actors like Will Smith or JGL using a foreign accent in a trailer is an immediate turnoff for many people because the sample size is so small that it automatically feels fake. Once you get used to it while watching the movie, you realize they're doing a decent job with it.

Definitely brilliant. Just saw the movie, and keep forgetting Will Smith was even in the movie!!! He totally disappeared into his role as a foreign doctor!!

reply

I sooo agree. The movie was amazing. As was Will Smith's portrayal. It took me quite a few minutes before i realized Will Smith was the lead. Only because I read the bio.

"oooooh....someone needs a RAID enema to kill that bug up their ass!"

totally agree.

He should have won one. Anyone who thinks he bombs or the movie sucked is clearly a douche. When I watched this film, I was looking for a hint of Will Smith and no Dr. Bennett Omalu. There was nothing in that performance that told me it was just Will Smith. He spoke like a Nigerian, he showed passion but not over the top, he showed wisdom and drive, and he not once talked like a know-it-all or a cocky son of a bitch. This is an award winning performance.

There was something very subtle and skilled in his performance and it was embodied in the way he did the American accent - he hesitated pronouncing certain words, just as you said, the way a Nigerian would, and not the way most actors who play foreigners in America do. I really like seeing him stretch his range with a role like this and I hope he does more.

reply

This is a totally award winning performance! I can see why the movie wasn't nominated for best picture because it's the same kind of movie as Spotlight, and maybe it's a little too soon for Concussion. But I think Will Smith was blocked from any nomination due to NFL's power of reach. Look at all of the negative threads and comments here. It's like a cult.

complete oscar rip off. I thought this was the best movie of 2015. Will did the best job of acting in 2015. @ huge strikes against the oscar for this huge mistake. Leo was horrible in the Revenant all he did was grunt and crawl around.

I thought he was great as well. I am not usually a fan of the type of movies Smith works on, so I was pleasantly surprised with hid depth here.

Part of me still wants to imagine what Idris Elba would have done with the role.

ITA. Will Smith seemed to melt into the role in this film. I'm not on the bandwagon about him being cheated out of an Oscar necessarily, but I felt a nomination would have been fitting. Still, his work in this stands without the Oscar. He was very good. He was also good in The Pursuit of Happyness and so was Jaden.
