in his truck with what looked like some sort of strobe light device? I missed whatever was said about it in the movie.

He was tasing himself. There was thick scar tissue on his thigh where he had repeatedly tased himself previously. He presumably desired the loss of consciousness.

Not quite as deep as "loss of consciousness". He just couldn't sleep any other way, so he knocked himself out with a taser.

That's messed up. I feel bad for all the players who've suffered so much from CTE.
