How come he never shaves?
I'm honestly curious by this, 24/7 rocking the 5-day scruff?
shareHonestly I think it is so he can look younger in the flashbacks in which he is clean-shaven.
shareIt's just the fashion nowadays. Chicks love the scruff.
SPOILERS:
Rosebud is a sled, Snape kills Dumbledore, Ned Stark dies.
Blind
shareBlind people can shave. And he's obviously using an electric razor to keep it trimmed at the level it's at, and electric shavers can get closer than that if you want. So it's definitely a choice he's making to keep it at the length it's at.

I was joking
shareHe's playing up the scruffy blind guy stereotype ... notice the tie and messy hair.
Plus, it makes him look rougher.
Due to the lack of moderators, trolls can ruin the IMDB message boards. Don't feed them.
Partially to contrast his younger age in the flashbacks.
But also... Between his dayjob and stalking the rooftops at night, Matt doesnt really sleep (except when he is injured). When would he pollisbly find the time for personal grooming?
Some great answers here. I think it's all of these:
1. It's not a priority for him.
2. It plays into the "helpless blind guy can't possibly DD" thing.
3. It is pretty popular fashion these days.
4. It does make the "young Matt" flashbacks easier. Both in terms of him looking younger and in terms of helping viewers separate them.
5. It helps hide some of his nicks and bruises.
6. It may even help his senses in some small way - like how some insects use tiny hairs to sense air currents.
(The last one is a joke - relax)

# 6 isnt really that far fetched. That is the purpose of a cat's whiskers. Although i thing beard stubble would be too course. Then again, we are talking about a dude who'se senses process data on a level that most animals cant keep up with.
I agree it's plausible for sure. Though I think it would sacrifice some of his ability to feel temperature variations. Having facial hair myself I can attest to that.
But perhaps that's why he adopts the (conveniently in vogue) 3-day shadow look. Enough to get the "whisker" effect without adversely impacting heat penetration.

Spec ops guys arent the only ones who grow tactical beards. Matts is merely the yuppie urban edition rather than deserrt warfare version.
shareOkay, it's just an aesthetic adopted for the series... in the comics Batman is frequently portrayed the same way. We often intuitively associated dark facial hair with toughness... you know, testosterone surging through my face sort of thing.
That said, man, I do like your #6... that was clever as an explanation.
If cotton sheets are like sleeping in sandpaper I imagine shaving would be uncomfortable.
"Need" is just a fiction. As is "should", "must", "value" and "importance".
Well... Most of his training seems to have been geared towards learning to control his senses as to not be flooded by overwhelming impressions. I can imagine that the coarsness of sheets are more inconvenient than traumatic (not aknowledging Bendevil).
But if that was the case, it raises the question of: why the hell would Matt be stacking booty calls like its going out of fashion? Human skin isnt remotely as smooth as we often like to believe (women included). And we smell quite a bit... Particularly during sexual arousal. I have a difficult time seeing how that would be enjoyable to somebody with such delicate senses.
He can control his senses while awake but shaving could still be uncomfortable.

We actually don't see Matt, ahem "stack booty calls". He lets Foggy think that as a cover up for him being tired every morning and unavailable in the evenings etc.

I'm thinking more in general terms.
Comics-version Matt is commonly recognized as one of the biggest sluts in Marvel, to the point of being chastized even by Wolverine of all people.
They might still decide to include that aspect of the character in the TV-show once he hits one of those life wrecking ordeals that writers love to throw at him every year. The promiscuity can easily be interpreted as Matt using sex as a coping mechanism, along with being the adrenaline junkie he is established as.
All I know is that when I look around at the general public, the guys who seem to get the most attention from women have that sort of bad boy look with the 5-day shadow and bed hair. Its the "new sexy" look. I haven't shaved in four years, my trimmer is set on the lowest setting and I always have daily scruff. If only the women here would notice, lol.
share"women have that sort of bad boy look with the 5-day shadow and bed hair. Its the "new sexy" look."
Not new... been around since the days of Miami Vice back in the 80s.
It came and went as many things do. I remember the 80s as if they were yesterday and the big look then was muscles and clean shaven faces. Some of the bad boys had "5 o'clock shadows" but only the really bad boys. In many TV shows the good guys, almost always clean shaven, would have a shadow during the episodes where they were playing their polar opposites. Michael Knight comes to mind right away.
Miami Vice had its own unique look and for most of the US no one was copying that look. When you compare the costuming in Miami Vice to almost any other drama that played in the same time period, the way they looked sticks out quite a bit, hardly valid to make a case for what was popular across the US.

I am mainly talking about the general public for most of the 80s. Of course I am sure there were pockets of people like you and your friends. These days there is hardly a show where all teh men are clean shaven. In the 80s clean shaven was the general rule and having a mustache (some of the tough guys - you forgot Charles Bronson) and then there were some of the "boy bands" where at least one of the dudes always had facial hair and most of the rest were shaven. There was a bit where the "fu man chu" was popular. But my point is, for the most part, clean shaven was the most common. These days, five o'clock shadow has become very common.
I traveled extensively in the 80's - I am not talking just about my hometown. This is not a contest, just an observation, and people observe things differently.
Cause he's hotter with the scruff? Charlie Cox without the scruff looks like a puppy... a cute adorable puppy. the scuff just accentuates the masculine... and Matt has been known to don the scruff at times in the comics too.
shareHe needs to at least shave his neck. Eww.
Arthur, put the kettle on and dig out those lemon hand wipes.
