I think the point was to explain how they did it, not that it was fake. They could have done some other practical effect or even somewhat computer generate it...

Thing is, if you are dreaming in this state and suddenly some bad intrusive thought crosses your mind, it just hangs there like it's a thing in the air. Takes some practice to get out of it, but it definitely is a mind state and nothing supernatural.
