I'm sort of surprised the film didn't at some stage explore the situation with Alice's father. We're told at the beginning of the film he died from alcoholism, but knowing Alice's condition was Familial Alzheimer's disease, it's logical that his drinking would have been self medicating, for he himself would have had Alzheimer's.

I think he left the family long before they - and he - died. It wouldn't have mattered anyway.

I always presumed the grief of loosing his wife and daughter drove him to the drink?? and he probably had Alzheimer's too but his alcoholism killed him before the disease progressed
