A great performance by Kristen Stewart and all others involved

I thought Kristen was brilliant in this film. She played an amazing part and was a great person to bounce off Julianne. I know people give Kristen a hard time but I just see that as people following social media and requiring cultural cues from a virtual reality to give them an opinion on contemporary life.

I was extremely impressed with Kristen and that end scene was absolutely fantastic.

yeah Kristen was surprisingly good.

I wish I could get past her Kristen Stewart -ness, but I can't. All of her performance are one note to me.

reply

Hopefully you'll get over that one day.

No doubt she's put in some sub par and pedestrian performances in her day. But check out The Cake Eaters, Adventureland and The Runaways.

She's one of the better actresses of the new generation.

reply

I've seen all of those. : (

In The Land of Women is another Kristen favorite of mine.

reply

Normally I can't stand her acting but yes she was good in this!

reply

That scene where she's acting in the play was terrible. She looked so awkward and it was painful to watch.

reply

Have you ever been to a play? They're all like that.

Err, no not all plays are like that.

reply

I thought she was great--clearly demonstrating that she was right to pursue her dream.

Well, you're delusional because Kristen Stewart is as one note as they come for actors. She has no range, no change in tone, no facial expressions, and can't emote. She has been graced a career and she is terrible.

reply

Nope, you're the one who's delusional. The journal-apology scene needed an actress with real gravity, and I can't think of anyone of Kristen Stewart's age who could have done it better. It's true that she doesn't give you wild swings of emotional tone running from A to Z, but the fact is that plenty of real people are that way and deserve to be represented on screen. What she lacks in extreme variety, she makes up for in nuance, if you're paying attention.

I don't understand where all these people are getting the idea that she's a bad actor. The professional critics don't seem to think so. And I'm not talking about random schmoes from blogs or small town papers. To wit:

Kenneth Turan, L.A. Times: "But if it wasn't for costar Kristen Stewart, who plays Alice's daughter Lydia, 'Still Alice' wouldn't be nearly as emotionally effective as it is. Moore and Stewart have been off-screen friends for more than a decade, and that bond only enhances the work they do here."

Even Wesley Moore's negative review gives Stewart (and Moore) props for their acting: "Still Alice is less a movie than furniture: a slab of moments intended to elevate, a pedestal for a performance (or two, as it turns out). Any scene between Stewart and Moore is a reason to remain seated."

The New York Times review says: "But the film as a whole functions mainly as a scaffolding for this remarkable feat of acting, and also for Kristen Stewart’s excellent work as Alice’s younger daughter, Lydia. The success of the 'Twilight' movies has allowed Ms. Stewart’s gifts to be underrated, but her more recent roles (here, in 'Camp X-Ray' and in 'Clouds of Sils Maria,' which will open next year) should help re-establish her as an insightful and unpredictable talent."

So I guess it's because people are reflexively going against her due to "Twilight". Sure, that seems fair. 😒

I have to disagree. I've seen many films of hers and she gives the same bland performance in all of them.

Twilight, In the Land of Women, Adventureland, Snow White and the Huntsman, The Messengers, American Ultra, Zathura, Cold Creek Manor. She gave an okay performance in Speak and did a good job in her supporting role in Panic Room. I've heard good things about Clouds of Sils Maria, but her performance here was just as bland as the other films I mentioned.

I heard great things about this film, and it was great! So I thought they must've made the right decision with Stewart, but she just kind of brought it down with her scenes. I'll save my criticism for her newer films I've yet to see but in my opinion based on what I have seen she's a bad actress at best. But, maybe she's giving better performances lately. Just not in the past and not here.
