Whys the rating going down?

I saw this back in September at TIFF, thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to the end. Not a dull moment. Definitely a fun ride. Been waiting patiently for others to view this so there'd be more discussion on this board and seems like most people who have seen it said they enjoyed it very much, just curious why the ratings going down though.

I won't spoil anything but this is very different from the typical horror movies we've been getting these days, eg. Conjuring, insidious, ouija etc. This movie took place mostly in one setting and focused pretty much on the dead body and the duo father and son, but it had the right amount of gore and psychological creepiness to satisfy both types of horror fans. Id watch this again but would recommend at night with the lights off and preferably alone lol

Btw, it was runner up for critics choice at TIFF of I remember correctly.

reply

Because it's a horror film and it's very rare for a modern horror film to get a score higher than 7.
I haven't seen it yet myself, gonna watch it tonight.
It better be good after all the people raving about it on here lol.

reply

Eff it, I gave this movie a 10 because I enjoyed every moment of it! Original setting, great premise, credible characters, realism, mystery, scares throughout, things to debate after. A great horror experience. Also, I rated it highly because haters constantly either lowball horror on IMDB or they compare everything to the classics like The Exorcist, lol. All horror can't compare to your first time!

reply

BeOneOfUs, did you watch it? I'm watching it now and am quite pleased thus far (about an hour in)...

reply

I love scary movies, and quite enjoyed this one up until about the last 30 minutes or so, so I'd assume the ending turned people off. Not posting spoilers, but let's just say when characters start doing dumb things and making dumb decisions I start to tune out.

Revenge is the most important meal of the day.

reply

To be fair at that point the characters were so messed up probably weren't thinking clearly anymore.

reply

Belladonna and herbs like devil's snare causes hallucinations in some forms. I took some choices in the end to be influenced by that...and sheer terror.

reply

It's online now so more people are watching it and adding their rating. I agree, I liked it a lot because it did feel fresh and original. I'm tired of "haunted house" or "exorcism" themes, too. I respect this film for being a unique addition to the genre, but I'm still after something a little "more" (whatever that might be).

Horror is tough, on IMDB I add another star to their ratings based on the fact most people rate them really harshly.

reply

As has been pointed out, a 7.1 rating really is quite impressive for a modern horror film. Arguably the most acclaimed horror films of the last two or three years were It Follows, The Babadook, and The Witch and they're all in the 6's in the ratings. I think this one will settle in that range as well, probably a 6.8 or so.

reply

I thought It Follows was good, cheesy story but had a creepy factor to it. I found babadook a bit disappointing though, maybe it was too hyped up. Still have to check out the witch.

reply

That's true unfortunately. Even solid and critically acclaimed horror movies tend to end up below the 7.0 mark on IMDB. I've always thought this was because of how extremely polarized opinions are on this genre. What's scary for one is "WROST MOVIE EVAR" for another.

I loved It Follows, The Babadook, and The Witch that you mentioned, but there are tons of people out there who hate them because it didn't do what they wanted.

reply

Please explain to me how both conjurings (1&2) managed to receive over a 7 rating. Not saying they are terrible movies but they are your generic Hollywood horror movies About demons and possession and full of jump scares. I'm not being an ass I'm genuinely curious as to HOW?

reply

I've wondered about that as well. I don't think they're particularly bad, but as far as horror go I find them disappointingly obvious and unimaginative. As to why lots of people like them and give high ratings I can only speculate:

- They are visually appealing.

- They have good actors (being a fan of Farmiga and Wilson myself).

- They have something happening very frequently, which satisfy impatient viewers who label other horror movies "boring".

- Some people enjoy jump-scares I guess...

- The "based on a true story" aspect somehow appeals to them. Personally I don't get it at all, but it looks like some think that alone makes the story "plausible" and "believable"!

- They are commercially successful and probably the only horror movies many will ever see.

- Both stories relate to taking care of the traditional family-unit, and are thus surprisingly "family friendly" for horror movies.

- They have uplifting endings, which goes against the usually bleak conclusions of horror that many have problems with.

You make good observations about why The Conjuring films are popular. Here's another point that piggy-backs on what you're saying. The Conjuring films have developed mass appeal, so a lot of the people rating it higher are non-horror fans who rarely or never see such films. In contrast, movies like It Follows, The Babadook, The Witch, and The Autopsy of Jane Doe will be seen by only horror fans, as a practical matter, and they will be tougher raters than the mass audience.

reply

Good points. And you have to take imdb ratings with a grain of salt.

Agree, and that's probably why they gain reputation as "horror movies for people who don't watch horror movies". They may not appeal as much to more hardcore horror fans who've seen it all.

reply

Just seen it and I was pleasantly surprised. It's a nice little horror gem, and the best I've seen for awhile.

-- 7.5 from me.

reply

Yeah, 7.5 from me too. You can't expect top ratings for movies like this. If you gave this 9 or 10 what would you give the real classics of cinema, La Grande Illusion, The Godfather, Battleship Potemkin, The Crowd, etc.

I absolutely loved this movie but we're not talking about one of the greats here. I've always thought IMDB ratings need to be out of 100 or 1000 so there would be a greater range.

reply

So this is the problem on IMDB. I don't compare genres! If you compare every film to Citizen Kane or some classic *beep* what is life? Welles can get a 10 and so can Wes Craven, in their own field.

reply

I also stand by this. I have many times had to say why some horror/action/sci-fi/etc films have so high or low scores and then i tell that i will rank movies mostly based on their genres, not as a overall factor against all films.

This way i can give an good score for some popcorn action movies which are mindless fun but you cannot compare those scores to good drama movies for example.

I do not think this is IMDb's fault (i could not quickly think of better rating system anyway) but how people rate movies.

reply

I enjoyed the movie but I must say the script was kinda lame at parts... I'd give it a 6.7 out of 10 stars, too bad you can't do this here.

reply

i loved this movie. i gave it an 8 out of 10 stars.

reply

what's interesting though is that (currently) the film is higher rated by female viewers. maybe because the female character won 

reply

Didn't like it because it seemed like there was no threat whatsoever and all of it was in their heads... Sure we saw her body heal back up but did we really? Hate the movies where they have the threats coming from illusions.. self harm and stuff like that. Good premise and sort of unique story. First time they *beep* up with the invisible assailant in the bathroom.. thats when it went from wow well have dead guys rising and trying to get them to its all happening in your head nonsense.
