This movie or The Witch? [spoilers]

They are different horror stories and sub-genres.

But The Witch felt better overall. A lot of work went into that movie, superb acting and the overall scenery is beautiful [except that cringe worthy scene with the boy near the end. That one made me roll my eyes to the back of my head]. Mastering the language from the period must have been quite a chore. I give special credit to the Father scene where he is eating dirt. That one made me really pity him and feel his pain.

This one, however, is so full of cliches I could spot a mile away {dead cat, radio interference, girlfriend's death, the boy's death] and cheap jump scares it felt nauseating. Also all the goddamn inconsistencies and dumb sh.t all along [there are corpses walking by... let us leave the ax on the ground, shell we]

Kudos goes to the girl though, she was very yummy for a corpse. And lying still pretending to be dead surely isn't an easy task.

For me, The Autopsy of Jane Doe was much better and almost easily the best horror film of 2016. The Witch functioned well as a period piece that showed the hardships of life in the 17th century and featured lots of fine acting, but I thought it failed to deliver any scares or suspense at all whatsoever. So it was basically half of an effective movie to me.

Everything about Autopsy clicked for me: the engrossing mystery, the great acting of its leads, the secluded location, the creepiness of the Jane Doe character, the eerie musical score, and its effective atmosphere of pervasive dread and terror.

I don't even see the Witch as a true Horror movie. More of a Time piece as you say, mixed with Noir and Thriller.

I liked it specially because it didn't rely on the jump scares and allowed for the surroundings to do their ambience thing.

He/she didn't say "TIME piece".

Also, "Noir" is a B&W crime drama, did you interpret The Witch as that?

The Witch all the way. This was disposable.

The Witch was supposed to be a horror? The Autopsy of Jane Doe is better hands down.

I can't compare the two since they are too different but I'm glad they both exist. The witch is a very special film, in the way that most of the horror (apart from the ending) come from the inmersive atmosphere it develops by showing us some of the hardships and situations of the time period. To me its like a historical horror film, which in its own way worked spectacularly and I absolutely loved the film. The autopsy of jane doe is more straight horror since it has a couple of jump scares but the srory and mystery surrounding everything that unravels as they perform the autopsy made the film's pace so damn good. The story is very simple but it works due to the mysterious ambient it created.

Instead of comparing and choosing I'm just happy such great and original horror films are coming out. I saw Ouija 2 for instance and it was absolute crap, cant believe it rated so highly.

I don't know why you would compare the two if you know they are two totally different movies.

The witch was excellent in nearly every way. Jane doe was also excellent but it did fail in many ways, the sub plot of the father and son relationship felt too rushed, not enough time was spent developing it. Aside from one scene of dialogue there wasn't much development. The fathers decision at the end would have been much more impactful if this subplot was more detailed. Also, the ending was pretty much awful and felt very much like a cop out. There was no real resolve. So the fathers decision was for nothing..

I love both, but autopsy fell apart near the end with some clichés, but I still love it. The witch is the superior movie.

reply

Are you suggesting The Witch didn't involve cliches?

You know, it's funny. People complained about the Witch being too literal and how it should have left things more vague to the point where they argue it was all ergot poisoning. Now they bitch about this movie because it was too vague.
