One thing I didn't get is, while everybody's hair looked nice and neat, what was the point of making Nia's hair look so gelled and greasy, as if always dirty? I am sorry if this sounds stupid but it was so striking, I couldn't help but wonder. I understand that short hair was deliberate but they could have kept it clean at least? Or was it some way of showing that she couldn't be so put together anymore to keep herself tidy since she had feelings?
Yes I noticed that as well. Her face looked like a wreck as well. Kristen Stewart is gorgeous but she was made to look really haggard in the movie. None of the other people were decked up or anything but she looked especially bad like she was ill/extremely stressed out or something which is odd since they were supposed to have no emotions. Maybe the stress of being a hider had done that to her? They didn't clarify though.
I was going to say that. There were other female characters whose hair looked similar. I thought it was probably some kind of gel people in the future would use, like Fashion at the time, just like everybody wearing grandpa Pants in "Her", lol.
There was a scene where she was telling Silas how incredibly difficult it was to be a hider - I took her hygiene, bags under her eyes, etc., as all the stress she was under. Reminded me of the Invasion of the Body Snatchers where they had to go around acting like robots to keep from being found out.

Try this analogy, a mentally ill person feels things a lot different than a person without it. Daily chores, life is excruciating to the person and overwhelming. The state of their hair and outward appearance is usually not the best depending on the severity of the condition and their own personal hygiene.
Nia was a hider. Picture yourself conditioned, brainwashed since birth to repress any and all emotions. Suddenly you FEEL. You face the possibility of co-workers or bosses treating you very different, loss of friends and your social standing if it is revealed you have this condition. You don't want to be an outcast and be sent to "The Den", do you? You do your very best to have amazing self control that Nia did. Do you think she's gonna look like Rebecca of Sunnybrook farms??
Excellent explanation of Nia looking a bit haggard. I couldn't understand the hair either and understand now what struggles she must have been going thru...hair be dammed, she needn't show a desire to look fresh whILe struggling to hide her SOS. Loved the chemistry I felt between Nia and Silas. Beautiful film.
