thx 1138

Is anyone else reminded of THX 1138 by this?
I haven't seen it yet and obviously all dystopian stories share some basic elements, but looking at the trailer and the design, there seems to be more than a superficial similarity.

Just realised someone else beat me to openin this thread by about 12 hours.
But at least it shows that others see parallels, too.

Yeah, it's obviously influenced by THX 1138 but also GATTACA, HER, BLADERUNNER, THE ISLAND and perhaps even METROPOLIS or ALPHAVILLE if you wish to go way back. I often wonder if the filmmakers are counting on audiences recognizing the references and homages or do they hope the audience will be ignorant enough to assume this is all fresh and original. They are disguising their film under the cloak of being a commentary on modern life and technology alienating us from one another but it is a theme that was explored many times before the internet and cel phones came along. The antiseptic visuals with flashes of passionate colour are also nothing new. Except for the young pretty leads, none of this looks entirely fresh at all.

No matter where you go, there you are.

reply

Yes I think the story line is exactly the same, even the poster for the film is almost identical to THX...im also reminded of the film Equilibrium, plus many more, think I'll skip this one since ive seen it so many time already.

The title of this message board tells you everything you need to know;

Equals (2015) : thx 1138

Definitely got the THX-11384EB vibe from this!

reply

Me too. I liked this movie quite a bit and gave it an 8, But I still like THX better which I gave a 10. THX had a much more sinister feeling to me.

reply

Thx 1138 as soon as the trailer started. Can't Hollywood think of anything new or original.

reply

not safely, nope. Actually this one sort of looks like a risk finanacially.

This film almost felt like a recreation of THX 1138, however I think it exceeded it in many ways. I always thought THX felt like a kind of early school project for Lucas more than an actual film. Its quite bizarre, nonsensical, drags on to the point of often wanting to fall asleep. This film in fact is like a better flowing, more coherent (and emotional) remake of it. I can quite easily say I enjoyed this much more than THX 1138, its a rarity today that a film can be made in the likeness of something from the 70's or 80's and actually pull it off better. But here we have the proof. In my opinion at least.

reply

Can't you think of a new or original complaint?

reply

Yes seriously, its like a rip off of THX-1138. Also a little bit of Equilibrium plot in it.

Yes! All I could think of was that it was THX 1138 without the shaved heads. Otherwise, you could almost swap scenes between the 2 and it would still work. Pity they couldn't think of something new to add to the theme.

I'd love to see this play out on a 'generation space ship', where the goal was to make it to the new colony planet without the inhabitants' society changing too much. That makes more sense in terms of wanting to keep a society in a kind of emotional stasis (instead of the usual idea of putting the colonists into suspended animation - see Pandorum or others for an example).

Or perhaps, it should less on the people inside the 'hive' and more about their 'escape' and time spent trying to survive in the wild.

reply

it is the exact same plot

i wonder if lucas will raise a fuss

reply

Almost pulled a Romeo & Juliet at the end too.

reply

I definitely started noticing that early on. Overall, the plot is quite different, though.
