So when did Mae die?

Am I missing something... Hugh happens upon the hideout with Mae and burned-face-guy. He tells her to leave. She does. He then has the big fight with burned-face, takes him back to the water tank, where he unlocks the memory of Mae killing herself. So when did that happen if she was still alive when he found the dude?

She wasn’t still alive

That wasn't Mae. If you look up the cast, she was a hooker played by Jules Hartley.

She looks identical to the Mae actress. Yet another stupid decision by the director, why do cast a lookalike for a scene where we need to keep the confusing plot straight? It was clearly not obvious.

reply

Dude the whole point was that she was similar….he follows her for a bit because she resembles her…but then shows visible disappointment when he gets a closer look and realizes it isn’t her.

Exactly, she's SUPPOSED to look like Mae

The idea was that Cyrus (the Cliff Curtis character) had been so affected by Mae's confession of love that he started obsessively re-enacting it, like Sylvan's crazy wife.

it's something of a plot contrivance in my opinion ... Cyrus might've been moved by Mae's confession, but when she ended it with Nick's name, he realized immediately that she was just using his brain as a maildrop. Why get sentimental over some gal who used you as a conduit?
